WYTHE SURPRISES AA POWER MARION

Brian Barnes scored 38 points as George Wythe edged Marion, the state's 10th-ranked Group AA team, 73-71 in a boys' non-district matchup Monday night in Wytheville.

Barnes hit a shot with 19 seconds left in the game to give the Maroons (16-3) a two-point lead, but Marion (17-2) was sent to the free-throw line for two shots on the ensuing possession. After missing the first attempt, the second was missed intentionally and resulted in a jump ball that went to the Maroons on the possession arrow.

Damien Taylor added 20 points for George Wythe, which is unranked in Group A.

In other games:

Glenvar 69, Radford 51: Josh Williamson reached a major milestone in the Highlanders' Three Rivers District victory over the visiting Bobcats.

Williamson scored 25 points, just enough to make him the second Glenvar player to reach 1,000 points in a career. The Highlanders' record for points is 1,041. The Highlanders (9-9, 4-5) have at least one regular-season game and the district tournament left.

Tony Hash led Radford (10-10, 7-2) with 15 points.

William Fleming JV 64, Covington Boys' Home 51: Cedric Preston scored 18 points as the Colonels topped the Indians in a non-district matchup at Fleming.

Rasul Majied added 12 points for the Colonels' junior varsity (14-2). Bernie Cooper led Covington Boys' Home (8-11) with 14 points.

Rockbridge County 76, Blacksburg 60: Ricky Wright scored 32 points as the Wildcats downed the Indians in a Blue Ridge District contest in Lexington.

Rockbridge County (6-12, 5-7) took a nine-point lead, at 21-12, through the first quarter and gradually added to its advantage during the remainder of the game. Jonathon Haston added 15 points for the Wildcats.

Philip Klaus led Blacksburg (7-11, 4-8) with 29 points.

Patrick Henry-Glade Spring 59, Rural Retreat 44: Billy Litton scored 19 points for the Rebels (7-11, 5-4) in a Hogoheegee District victory over the Indians (1-14, 1-8) in Glade Spring.

Litton also had six steals and Dennis Hill added 13 points.

Wayne Terry led the Indians with 18 points.

North Cross 74, Hargrave Military Academy 55: Jeff Baetz scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Raiders held off a third-quarter rally to beat the Tigers in a Virginia Independent Conference game at North Cross.

The Raiders (8-10, 5-8) led 41-19 at halftime, but Larry Washington scored eight of his 13 points during the third quarter to spark Hargrave Military. The Tigers (8-11, 4-9) cut their deficit to five, but Baetz scored 10 points in the fourth quarter as North Cross ended the threat.

Brandon LaCroix had 14 points for the Raiders, David Foster had 13 and Michael Stoeckle 12.

Hargrave Military got 12 points from George Dwight and 10 from John Cruickshank.
