TECH TRACK COACH GETS HONOR

Russ Whitenack, men's track and field coach at Virginia Tech, has been recognized for his contributions to the sport.

Whitenack received the Walt Cormack award, named for the former coach at VMI who built a successful program based on integrity and good will.

Track and field coaches have been awarded this honor since 1973, when Cormack was the first recipient.

The 1997 season marks Whitenack's 24th year as Tech's head coach. He has produced 19 All-Americans and won two Metro Conference indoor championships.

Whitenack also coached the Tech women's program. He was named Metro coach of the year for the 1992 outdoor season and again after Tech's indoor championship in 1993.
