ABSHER, Ossie Ingram, 88, of Floyd, died Wednesday, February 5, 1997. Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including William C. ``Bill"" and Connie Hayden of Floyd, with whom she made her home. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Mount Zion Christian Church, with the Rev. Richard Spencer officiating. There will be a visitation at the church after the service. AKERS, Harvey, Sr., (``Fred""), 73, of Belspring, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 1997 at his home. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U. S. Army and was a recipient of the Purple Heart, a retired employee of Hercules and a farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, William D. and Dessie Mae Price Akers, as well as one brother and seven sisters. A loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Geneva C. Akers of Belspring; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dennis Young of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Freddie and Ann Akers of Belspring; four grandchildren, Jonathan and LeeAnna Akers, and Adam and Sara Young. He is also survived by one faithful brother, Charlie Akers of Radford; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, February 14,1997, at Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joe McCoy officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. BANE, Harry R. Jr., 77, of Kahoka, Mo., died Monday, February 10, 1997, in Keokuk, Iowa. He was born July 2, 1919 in Aurora, Neb., son of Harry R. and Laura Zeitz Bane, and marri ed Margaret Darlene Baker on June 10, 1947 in Omaha, Neb. He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of Kahoka, Mo; four daughters, Mrs. Paul (Susan) Anderson of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Tom (Nancy) Lynn of Moberly, Mo., Mrs. Hubert (Janet) Nelson of Kahoka, Mo., and Mrs. Mike (Barbara) Peterson of Roanoke, Va.; together with two sisters; four grandchildren; and other relatives. In 1979 while in Roanoke, Harry retired from the Norfolk and Western Railroad, where he had been a civil engineer for 32 years. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 13, 1997, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Kahoka, Mo., with burial in Kahoka Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Kahoka United Methodist Church or the Clark County (Missouri) Senior Center in Kahoka. Services are under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka, Mo.

BARNETT, Gertrude Anderson, 90, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997. Arrangements by Rader Funeral Home, Daleville.

BRICKEY, Virginia R., 61, of Salem, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997 at Lewis Gale Hospital. She attended the Salem Church of God and was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Richard O'Dell Brickey. Survivors include three daughters and two grandchildren. Numerous brothers and sisters and her mother Elvie Snead. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 14, 1997 at 2 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem with the Rev. Tony Holley officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 13, 1997 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

CARPER, Harold Douglas, 82, of Culpeper, died Tuesday, February 11, 1997 at Culpeper Memorial Hospital. He was born October 10, 1914 in Salem, Va. to the late James E. Carper and Martha A. Carper. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Caroline P. Carper; and one son, Douglas H. Carper of Richmond. A graveside service will be held Friday, February 14, 1997 at 2 p.m. in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Va., with the Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. ENGLAND, Frances Roy, 70, formerly of Boones Mill, passed away Monday, February 10, 1997, in Washington, D.C. Funeral services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Boones Mill. Rev. Connie Lee will officiate with the interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

JOHNSTON, Earl Lester, 88, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 1997, in a Salem veteran's care center. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a long time member of Melrose Baptist Church, serving as a deacon. Mr. Johnston was a member of Melrose Masonic Lodge #139 AF & AM, Webber High Twelve Masonic Lodge #282 AF & AM, the Scottish Rite Consistory, and the Kazim Temple, as well as a member of the American Legion. He was a retired mail carrier from the U.S. Postal Service and later worked part time at the Roanoke Civic Center, as well as serving as a volunteer at Community Hospital. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Opal Terrell Johnston; his daughter and son-in-law, Sheila an d Dr. Kenneth R. Garren, Salem; grandsons, Dr. David Garren and his wife, Penny, Dallas, Texas, Dr. Steve Garren, Charlottesville; his granddaughter and her husband, Kristine Garren Snow and Richard Michael Snow, Salem; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Groseclose, Savanah, Ga. The family suggests memorials be made to Melrose Baptist Church for the new building fund or the Shriner's Cripple Children's Hospital. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday, February 14, 1997, from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Larry E. Sprouse will officiate. Masonic rites will be by Melrose Masonic Lodge #139. LANE, Oakles Eldridge, 87, of Christiansburg, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997, in a Montgomery County hospital. Surviving are a brother, Henry Lane, Christiansburg; two sisters, Rachel Jones, Christiansburg, and Helen Simmons, Radford; a special friend, Bessie Taylor, Christiansburg. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, February 14, 1997, at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Glennard Quesenberry and Rev. Tom Warren officiating. LEWIS, Louise Camden, 84, of Buena Vista, formerly of Glasgow, died Tuesday, February 11, 1997, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born December 26, 1912 in Rockbridge County, she was a daughter of the late John E. and Susan Ann Camden. Mrs. Lewis was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Wesley Lewis. She is survived by four daughters, Betty Hartless, Buena Vista, Margaret L. Conner, Lexington, Janet Agnor, Fairfield, and Brenda Markham, Glasgow; two sons, Carl Wesley Lewis Jr., Jacksonville, Fla. and John H. Lewis, Madison Heights; a sister, Lillian Rowzie, Alexandria; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 14, 1997, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William K. Thomas and the Rev. Louis Dodd officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. LONG, Edison Alonzia Sr., 81, of Lexington, died Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at his residence. He was born on June 4, 1915 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Lyle Allen Long and Nannie Sorrells Long. Mr. Long retired as a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include his wife, Sally Cooper Long; four sons and daughters-in-law, William Earl Long Sr. and Gillie Long of Lexington, Edison A. Long Jr. and Arlene Long, Clarence W. and Barbara Long, Fred L. and Alatha Long, all of Richmond. Mr. Long was preceded in death by a son, Lester M. Long, whose surviving wife is Patsy M. Long of Lexington; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Cornelia L. and Ervin Harris, Ruby L. and Roosevelt White, both of Richmond, Pauline L. Poindexter, Lexington, and Zennia L. Young, St. Anne, Ill.; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Cornelia L. Madison, Clifton Forge, Ella L. Smith, Uniontown, Pa., Genevieve L. Lee and Charles Lee, Radford, Stella L. Cooper and John Henry Cooper of Lexington, and Wilbert Cooper of New York; three sisters-in-law; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, Pete Sensabaugh and family, John M. Crutchfield and family, and Raymond Kenney. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 1997, in the Long Family Cemetery with Elder Randolph Hare officiating. PATSELL, Waneta Marie Counts, 82 of Vinton passed away Wednesday, February 12, 1997 in Lawrenceville, Va. She was the widow of John A. Patsell. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Charles A. Sr. and Delmna Hoke Patsell of Lawrenceville; nine foster children; four grandchildren, John T. Patsell, Nancy P. Lee, Julia E. Patsell, Charles A. Patsell Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Patsell, Rebecca Lee and Erin Lee; two sisters, Edith Gabbert, White Sulfer Springs, W.Va. and Edna Napier, Calahan, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. RALSTON, Mazie F., 90, of Monterey, died Monday, February 10, 1997, at Friendship Manor Nursing Center. She is survived by a daughter, Lois Hevener of Monterey; and a son, Merdith ``Mert'' Ralston of Salem. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, Va., with visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

ROBINSON, Mary Madalene Carter, 91, of Madison, N.C., passed away Wednesday, February 12, 1997. Born June 15, 19 05, she was a daughter of the late Dennis Hayes and Melinda Catherine Wickline Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira C. Robinson. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Jerene and J. Clark Arrington of Rocky Mount, Glenna and Jimmy Dickens of Prattville, Ala., Mary Catherine (Cathy) and Robert (Bobby) Feather of Rocky Mount; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Olin Robinson of Thomasville, N.C., Leo and Betty Robinson of Moneta, Marvin and Mary Robinson of Madison, N.C.; one brother, Roscoe P. Carter of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. SAUNDERS, Vernelle Woodford, 77, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 1997, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born August 2, 1919 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Arthur D. Woodford and Clodie Patterson Woodford. She was a retired employee of Bedford Weaving, and was a member of the Mt. Olivet Southern Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, W. Riley Saunders; an adopted daughter and her husb and, Wanda and John Goodrich, Lynchburg; also several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 13, 1997, at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Olivet Southern Baptist Church, by the Rev. Mike Jones. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. THOMPSON, James Seldon, 75, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at Radford Community Hospital. He was a member of the Radford Christian Church, and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired employee of Hercules. Survivors include his wife, Edith Rasnake Thompson of Radford; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James S. Jr. and Alice Thompson of Dublin, and Jeff Thompson of Radford; one sister, Coleen Bailey of Richmond; two grandchildren, Jamie Thompson and Steven Thompson; nieces and nephews, Nancy and Carl Bailey of Cleveland Va. and D. E. Bailey II of Richmond. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 14, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Radford Christian Church in Radford with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating.
