STILL BETTER OFF RED

George Washington, Billy the Kid, Christopher Columbus, Eleanor Roosevelt and Napoleon.

They were all towering infernos, beet-heads, red on the heads.

``The Little Mermaid'' has russet tresses; so does the ``new'' Nancy Drew. Raggedy Ann and Andy, Yosemite Sam, Little Orphan Annie, Archie and MAD magazine's Alfred E. Neuman were all created with crimson, flame-colored, carmine, cherry, high-colored, vermilion, ruby hair.

Then there are the redheads by design - Juliet Prowse, Barbra Streisand (sometimes), Victoria Principal and Dennis Rodman (sometimes).

The Duchess of York was called ``the Redheaded Commoner'' when she wed Prince Andrew. Lucille Ball was called ``Technicolor Tess'' when she dyed her hair.

We paint the town red, have red-letter days, roll out the red carpet, are red-blooded Americans and are red hot.

So why, according to a survey of college students, are redheaded women considered unattractive but competent and redheaded men thought of as ``safe''?

Carrot-tops take heart, though - you never hear "dumb redhead" jokes.
