PUBLIC PULSE

* The Pulaski County School Board will put an elevator at Dublin Middle School to comply with handicapped accessibility regulations. At a session cut short Thursday night because of snow, the board accepted a contract with a Bluefield, W.Va., firm to install the elevator for about $104,500. The work will start in the spring and installation should be complete when schools open for the 1997-98 year.

The board also approved a field trip for the Pulaski County Melodies to perform at Carowinds. Another meeting will probably be held Tuesday to complete any unfinished business.

Upcoming:

* The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will not meet Monday because it announced the pending hiring of a new county administrator this week. Jeffrey Johnson, now Brunswick County's administrator, will start work March 3. The county announced Wednesday that Johnson had accepted a job offer. The offer followed a string of closed-door interviews and a closed-door discussion among the supervisors Monday night. No formal vote was taken before Johnson's acceptance was announced. The board will officially hire Johnson at its Feb. 24 meeting, when it will vote to authorize the signing of a contract, county staff said Friday.

* Montgomery County School Board members will meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday with the firm they hired to find a new superintendent. A representative from Sockwell and Associates, a firm based in North Carolina, will be meeting with different school groups all day Tuesday and part of Wednesday. At its regular meeting, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., the School Board will discuss developing conceptual drawings for the three new schools it wants to build. It will also discuss results from a survey filled out by members at its retreat held in December. The board meets at its office on 200 Junkin St. in Christiansburg.
