ARNOLD, Maudie Virginia, 75, of Hardy, passed away Friday, February 14, 1997. She was the widow of George A. Arnold; and is survived by eight daughters and the ir spouses, Lana and Roger Barr, Bassett, Ellie and Dave Leimer, Minnesota, Syble and John Mills, Hardy, Kathryn and Gene Weaver, Hardy, Sharon and Doug Breeding, Troutville, Janet and Tommy Wheeler, Vinton, Loretta Williams, Wilson, Va., Teresa and Rudolph Ellis, Hardy; five sons and their spouses, Robert and Linda Miller, Roanoke, Doug and Linda Arnold, Roanoke, David Arnold, Hardy, Cecil and Wanda Arnold, Hardy, Herbert and Christine Arnold, Vinton; one sister, Elsie Cash, Roanoke. Also surviving are 38 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 10 a.m. Monday, February 17, 1997, with Rev. Troy B. Webb officiating. Interment will be in the Arnold Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Lotz Roanoke Chapel 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

BARNETT, Gertrude Anderson, 90, was born March 19, 1906 in Wrightsville, Va. and departed this life February 12, 1997. She was married to the late Jesse U. Barnett for 57 years. She was a faithful member of the Wrightsville Baptist Church and The Lily of the Valley Baptist Church. She devoted her life to her family, her churches and her community. Surviving Mrs. Barnett are her son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin U. and LaVern Barnett of Roanoke; her daughter and son-in-law, Mildred A. and Fredrick Williams of New York City, N.Y.; three grandsons, Benjamin Barnett Jr. (Tammi) and Brian Barnett both of Atlanta, Ga., Daniel Gaines of Greenville, N.C.; two granddaughters, Cynthia Wheel (Christopher) of Harper Heights, Tex., Bonita Barnett of Va. Beach; three great-grandchildren, Kezia Barnett Wheel, Payton and Benjamin Barnett III; one niece, Laura Mae Gaines of Covington; her life long friend and class-mate, Mrs. Mary Barber; and a host of friends and neighbors whose lives she has touched. Funeral services will be Monday, February 17, 11 a.m. at The Lily of the Valley Baptist Church with the Reverend Matthew T. Barnett officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. BOONE, George A. Sr., 85, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, February 13, 1997 at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was a mechanic with Woodson Pontiac for 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Vivian Webb Boone; sons, George A. Boone Jr., Roanoke, J. Richard Boone, Blue Ridge; daughters, Marie B. Bailey, Norfol k, Irene E. Tribbett, Roanoke, Carolyn Sue Leslie, Blackstone; sister, Elizabeth Garland, W. Palm Beach, Fla.; brother, Jack L. Boone, Norfolk; also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted noon Monday, February 17, 1997 at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Bob Barton and Rev. Troy Webb officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.

BOWLES, Katharine Dixon, of Richmond, died Saturday, February 8, 1997, at her home. Born in New Bern, N.C., she was the widow of Eugene Gray Bowles. She was a graduate of St. Luke's Hospital and did hospital and private duty nursing in Richmond for many years. She was known and loved by many as the school nurse at St. Christopher's School. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, The Woman's Club, and served for many years on the Board of Children's Hospital. She is survived by her children, Bernard Brooks Lipford, Eugene Gray Bowles Jr., Suzanne Bowles Royster of Roanoke, and Beverley Ruffin Bowles; her beloved grandchildren, Bryen Shae Lipford, Spencer Bowles Broadbent, Eugene Gray Bowles III, Peter Hartwell Bowles, Jesse Dillon Bowles, Randolph Lewis Royster III, Virginia Gray Royster, Jennifer Bowles Royster, and William Kirkland Royster. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 10, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to the Children's Hospital.

LILLY, Delora P., (``Pat''), 77, of Peterstown, W.Va., died Thursday, February 13, 1997, at her home following a long illness. She was born September 5, 1919 at Milton, and was the daughter of the late Fred and Vernice Patterson of Milton, W.Va. ``Granny Pat'', as she was known by so many, was a member of the Peterstown United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Class, a member of the Ladies Sunshine Circle, and was a member and former president of the Peterstown United Methodist Women. She was a former postmaster of the Peterstown Post Office, and recorder for the Town of Peterstown. She was preceded in death by one brother, William Patterson; and two sisters, Betty and Dixie Patterson. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carol Lilly of Narrows; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Daniel Vernon of Salem, and Dreama and Cleve Settle of Peterstown, W.Va.; two sisters, Helen Perdue and Jean Jordon of Milton, W.Va.; and nine grandchildren. Also surviving are three special friends, Virginia Rorrer of Peterstown, W.Va., Nancy Rule of Ballard, W.Va., and Tammy Johnson of Narrows. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 16, 1997, at the Peterstown United Methodist Church with Dr. John Sauvage officiating. MARTIN, Ruby Harrison, 93, of Raleigh Court Health Care Center, died Thursday, February 13, 1997, at her residence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Ada Bailey Trent; three husband, Hiram Sizemore, H. R. Harrison and George Martin, and two sons, James W. Sizemore and Hiram Sizemore Jr., M.D. Surviving are three grandchildren, Dr. Jill Marie Sizemore and Angelika Brigitte Wimmer of Roanoke and James W. Sizemore of San Francisco, Calif., and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at George W. Seaver Funeral Home Chapel in Princeton, W.Va., with the Rev. MASON, LaRue Bowman, 74, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, February 13, 1997, after a brief period of illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wick Mason and her parents, Floyd and Etta Bowman. LaRue was a life long member of Central Church of the Brethren and was a retired office manager for General Electric. During her life time, LaRue dedicated herself to the research of Geneology. She is survived by her loving sister, Melva B. Trout; her brother and sister-in-law, Ferman and Pearl Bowman; a niece, Tracy Huffman, Florence, Ky.; nephews, H. David Trout II, Hardy, J. Edward Trout, Roanoke; great-nieces and nephews, Melinda Kantor, Jason Trout, Zack Trout, all of Roanoke, James W. Huffman Jr., Covington, Ga., Terryee Trout, Andrews, S.C.; great-great-nieces, Jordan and Madison Kantor, both of Roanoke, Kristen Huffman, Covington, Ga.; also many special friends. MAYO, George Sidney, 80, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, February 13, 1997, at his home. He was born March 25, 1916 in Charlottesville, son of the late William Marshall Mayo and Emma Houchens. He was the husband of the late Talma Paxton Mayo, and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Mayo, Eva Brown; three brothers, William, Frank, and James Mayo. Mr. Mayo was a retired tile and floor contractor. He is survived by a special friend, Mrs. Myrtle Hall; two nieces; and two nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 16, 1997, at Riverview Cemetery with Mr. David Cuthbertson officiating. MOODY, Samuel Franklin Jr., 81, of Natural Bridge Station, died Thursday, February 13, 1997, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. He was born in Oakvale, W.Va. on June 4, 1915, a son of the late Samuel F. Moody Sr. and Beulah Williams Moody. Mr. Moody retired from Burlington Industries and was a school bus driver for the Rockbridge County School System. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for a number of years. Mr. Moody was a member of Arnolds Valley Baptist Church, and was currently chairman of the Board of Deacons. Survivors include his wife, Alise Rice Moody; three daughters, Mrs. Brenda A. Berry, Natural Bridge Station, Ms. Sue Moody, Harrisonburg, and Mrs. Kay Wilcher, Roanoke; a half sister, Mrs. Shirley M. Haynie, Lottsburg; five grandchildren, Melissa K. Wilcher, Roanoke, Jeffrey Berry, Glasgow, Jonathan Berry and his wife, Cindy, Buena Vista, Patrick Marrah, Poulsbo, Wash., and Ryan Marrah, Vienna; two great-grandchildren, Crystal and Daniel Ramsey. PITSENBARGER, Billy, 52, of Chattanooga, Tenn., formerly of Buena Vista, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997, at his residence. He was born January 30, 1945, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of Marjorie Reedy Pitsenbarger, Harrisonburg, and the late Ward Pitsenbarger. He had lived in Chattanooga for the past 17 years, and was employed with Carolina Freight as a truck driver for 16 years. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of the Teamsters Union #515, member of the Moose Club in Virginia, served with the Volunteer Fire Department in Virginia, and was a member of the Frawley Baptist Church in East Ridge, Tenn. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Barbara ``Bobbie'' Pitsenbarger, Chattanooga, Tenn.; son, Tony Lee Pitsenbarger, Buena Vista; daughter, Tammy Gail Pitsenbarger, Buena Vista; two stepsons, Tony Fletcher, Rock Spring, Ga., Howard Fletcher, East Ridge, Tenn.; two sisters, Betty Jo Drummond, Broadway, Donna Pitsenbarger, Harrisonburg; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Born on January 13, 1955, he was preceded in death by his parents, Inez and Chester (``Smitty'') Smith. She was the precious mother of Jane Whitlock Slate and husband, Coy Slate, of Dublin; loving grandmother of Wendy Slate Steiss and husband, Darrin Steiss, of High Point, N.C., and Patrick Slate of Glen Burnie, Md.; and dearest great-grandmother of Cory and Kaitlyn Steiss; beloved sister of William ``Bill'' Likens and wife, Juanita, of Belspring, and Albert ``Pete'' Likens and wife, Dorothy, of Virginia Beach; loving aunt of many nieces and nephews.
