TECH WOMEN SIGN SOCCER STANDOUT

Joy Nsubuga, a scoring threat from Holly Springs, N.C., signed with the Virginia Tech women's soccer team Friday.

Nsubuga selected the Hokies over national powerhouses North Carolina and N.C. State and will receive a full grant-in-aid, according to Tech coach Sam Okpodu.

Nsubuga tied an Apex High School record by scoring 38 goals last season. She also had 21 assists for 97 points.

In other news in the region:

* Alabama-Birmingham's Mike Terry and Rodney Eberly each drove in four runs and Corey Hardin hit a pair of home runs in an eight-run seventh inning as the Blazers opened their baseball season with an 18-5 home victory over VMI.

Scott Beyer (1-0) pitched five innings, scattering seven hits while striking out three to earn the victory. Keydets starter W.G. Smith (0-2) surrendered eight runs and 12 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Hank Morgan led VMI (3-3) with three hits and Scott Thompkins added two RBI.

* The Blue Ridge District cheerleading competition scheduled for today has been postponed until March 1 at Lord Botetourt High School.
