Blacksburg chamber adds board members

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce has four new members of the board of directors:

Monte Engebritson, plant manager of Federal Mogul Corp.; Teresa B. McCoy, special events coordinator at the Donaldson Brown Hotel at Virginia Tech; Pat Taylor, manager of the Food Lion store on North Main Street; and Joel S. Williams, certified financial planner with Dean Witter Reynolds.

Shelba Baker, branch manager at First Virginia Bank, has been chosen to fill a two-year vacancy on the board.

The board of directors is made up of 16 people who serve three-year terms. They are the chamber's governing body and make all decisions and set guidelines and programs. Board members also lead committees. Engebritson will head the fund-raising committee. McCoy will be in charge of member relations. Taylor will lead the governmental affairs committee. Williams is co-chairman of the economic development committee with Nick Vlahakis, president of Alliant Tech Systems.

Internet-ready town houses

BLACKSBURG - Pheasant Run Crossing town houses on Givens Lane in Blacksburg may be the first development in the town to install ethernet Internet connections without help from the Blacksburg Electronic Village.

The fiber-optic cables that make the ethernet connection possible were installed during construction. Twenty-eight units were completed last August, and 44 more are slated to be finished this August. Internet access will be provided by Citizens InterNET and Citizens Telephone.

The ethernet connection means residents can use the Internet and e-mail accounts many times faster than if they used slower-speed modems.
