K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke won the championship match Monday at the Mid-Atlantic Championship No. 2 tennis tournament in Baltimore.
Hippensteel, the fourth seed, defeated Ryan Davidson of Virginia Beach 6-3, 6-3 for the under-18 title.
* Jeff Wendell of Roanoke won his race in the Showroom Stock C division of the Moroso Nationals in the rain Sunday at Moroso Raceway in West Palm Beach, Fla. Wendell, driving a Dodge Neon, led from the second lap to the end in the 45-mile Sports Car Club of America-sanctioned sprint race.
* Kirk Johnson, a former Glenvar athlete who became one of the state's top girls' high school basketball coaches, announced Monday he is retiring from that job at Wilson Memorial. Johnson coached Wilson Memorial for 17 years and his teams won three state championships. His overall record is 291-128.
