MURDER SUSPECT OUT OF HOSPITAL, IN JAIL

Police arrested Ronald Brooks Jr. Monday morning and charged him with the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend 10 days ago.

Brooks, 32, is being held in Roanoke County-Salem Jail without bond on charges of first-degree murder and using a firearm to commit a felony. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 2 p.m. today in Roanoke County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Brooks was released Monday from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after recovering from a self-inflicted, superficial gunshot wound to his head, according to Roanoke County Detective S.C. Sturgill. Police said they delayed charging Brooks because of financial and legal problems that could arise if Brooks was arrested while still in the hospital.

Lisa Sizemore, 26, was shot to death outside Brooks' Malvern Road house the night of Feb. 8. After she was killed, Brooks shot himself in the face with a pistol. Sizemore and Brooks had broken off their relationship shortly before the shooting.

On Monday, detectives also served Brooks with two misdemeanor warrants that had been taken out by his relatives. He was charged with making phone threats and abusive language. Sturgill would not elaborate on the incidents that led to the charges. Brooks was also denied bond on those charges, according to a sheriff's deputy.
