MARTINSVILLE CLAIMS TITLE IN OVERTIME

Leander Preston scored 23 points and Danny Wade delivered four of his six points in overtime as Martinsville defeated Magna Vista 73-65 on Monday night, winning a playoff game for the Piedmont District boys' regular-season title at Bassett High School.

Martinsville will play the winner of the Bassett-Laurel Park first-round matchup in a semifinal of the Piedmont tournament. The Bulldogs earned an automatic berth in the Region IV tournament.

Magna Vista forced overtime when Landa Martin hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter. Martin finished with 22 points and Travis Preston added 19 for the Warriors, who face the winner of the first-round game between Fieldale-Collinsville and Patrick County.

Girls

Franklin County 57, Patrick Henry 41: Tasha Williams scored 16 points and Kelli Preston added 10 as the Eagles overpowered the Patriots and won the Roanoke Valley District play-in game in Rocky Mount. The Eagles advance to play Pulaski County at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Cave Spring in the first round of the tournament.

Roanoke Catholic 42, Timberlake Christian 26: Whitney Cummings scored the first six points in a 12-0 run that sparked the Celtics (8-15) to a victory over the visiting Tornadoes (3-13) in the first round of the Blue Ridge Conference tournament.

Catholic will visit Grace Christian tonight in the tournament.
