Two people were injured in a head-on crash on South Main Street Tuesday afternoon after a car crossed five lanes of traffic and collided with a pickup.
Blacksburg Police Lt. Bruce Bradbery said police are still investigating what caused Vicky Wisdom-Justice to drive her car into oncoming traffic.
"Speed does not appear to be a factor," Bradbery said. "She does not remember anything except driving down the hill and waking up in the ambulance."
Police said Wisdom-Justice was driving south in the 3900 block of South Main Street, near the Wilco service station, when her car crossed several lanes and hit a pickup that was leaving Wilco. The accident occurred about 1 p.m.
The impact was so severe that it knocked the engine out of the car and the transmission out of the truck, Bradbery said. Neither driver appeared to have been wearing a seat belt.
Wisdom-Justice, a 36-year-old Blacksburg resident, remains in Columbia Montgomery Regional Hospital and was listed in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon, a nursing supervisor said. Both vehicles were totaled, according to police.
The truck's driver, Jimmy Shepherd, 32, of Roanoke, was treated and released Tuesday. Damage to his pickup was estimated at $10,000.
One northbound lane was closed and traffic was slowed for about an hour and 15 minutes while police cleared the scene, Bradbery said.
