DIABETES COMPANY PLANS SPLIT NEW DIVISION WON'T INITIALLY CREATE JOBS

Diabetes Self Care Inc., the Roanoke company that provides products and disease management information to diabetics, is being split into two divisions.

The new subsidiary, Healthcare Management Solutions Inc., will serve the managed care market and expand disease management services to include ailments other than diabetes.

In its announcement Tuesday, the company did not identify the specific disease services it will offer, but a spokesman for the parent company, Universal Self Care Inc. of Livonia, Mich., said they will be marketed by summer and that some new contracts already are pending.

Initially, the new division will not mean additional employees in Roanoke, but people will be hired as the business grows, the spokesman said.

Twenty-three of the 182 employees at Diabetes Self-Care will move to the new subsidiary, which will be housed in the same building near the Roanoke Regional Airport but have separate offices.

Diabetes Self Care will continue to serve individual patients and those directed to it by insurance companies and Medicaid, the spokesman said.
