BORN JUNE 9, 1920 IN NEW BERN, VA, SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF THE LATE ALBERT STANLEY AKERS AND MYRTLE SARAH BOND AKERS. SHE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HER HUSBAND, HUBERT BROOKS ALTIZER, ONE SON, HUBERT KEITH ALTIZER, ONE SISTER, THELMA AKERS ELSWICK, AND TWO BROTHERS, MERLE AKERS AND LATHA AKERS. BEELS, Ernst, (``Ernie""), 77, of Roanoke, and formerly of Iron Gate, died Monday afternoon, February 17, 1997 at Friendship Health Care Center after an extended illness. He was the retired owner of Covington Transfer & Storage, a graduate from the Nautical College of Falmouth, England and served as an officer for eleven years in the Dutch Merchant Marine (six of the years were during World War II). After his retirement, Mr. Beels drove for the Clifton Forge High School Wrestling Team and also was a driver with the League of Older Americans for 10 years. He was well known for his great love of animals. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Carla B. and David A. Spencer of Roanoke; four sisters, Geraldine DeGerlick of France, Sophie Caldwell of Bakersfield, Calif., Sasha Beels of San Francisco, Calif., Connie Thomas of Jamestown, Rhode Island; his former spouse, Bettielou M. Davidson of Roanoke; special friends, Stewart and Glenna Dodd of Covington and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday from First Presbyterian Church (Lapsley Chapel), with the Rev. Robert D. Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alleghany Humane Society Shelter ( P. O. Box 60, Low Moor, Va. 24457). BELCHEE, Mary Haynes, (``Mama Mary""), 99, of Roanoke, formerly of Welch, W.Va., went to be with the Lord at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, William and Jean Blakely Belchee of Bluefield, W.Va. on Tuesday, February 18, 1997. Born on June 17, 1897 in Bramwell, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late William Daniel and Mary Lelia Hancock Haynes. She and her family were active members of the Elizabeth Bowen Jones Memorial United Methodist Church in Bramwell and the Welch United Methodist Church. For many years, she lived with her daughter, Elizabeth and Buy M. Pendleton in Roanoke, Va., where she was a member of the Cave Spring United Methodist Church, until she returned her membership to Bramwell MEthodist Church. Mrs. Belchee lived to see all of her children celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversaries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Claude Belchee in 1953, a brother, William Hancock Haynes. Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Margaret Jewell Eldred and her husband, Everett of Radford, Va. (Claytor Lake), Mrs. Elizabeth Pendleton and her husband Guy of Roanoke; son, William Be. Belchee and his wife, Jean of Bluefield, W.Va.; grandchildren, William Blakely Belchee of Matthews, N.C, Betty Belchee Weber of St. Louis, Mo., Daniel Chester Pendleton of Roanoke, Susan Pendleton Hall of Roanoke, Sarah Eldred Terry of Farmville and William Everett Eldred of Richmond; and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 21, 1997, at 1 p.m. from the Bramwell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Clark S. Peloubet officiating. Burial will follo w at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, Va. BOWMAN, Elsie Hicks, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, February 15, 1997. She was the widow of Fred T. Bowman and a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church. Surviving are 2 sons, Larry T. Bowman, U. S. Foreign Service, Vienna, Austria and Kenneth W. Bowman, Roanoke; 1 grandson, James V. Bowman, Va. Beach; 2 sisters, Mary Riddle, Johnson City, Tenn. and Margaret Profitt, Aiken, S.C.; 1 brother, Hubert Hicks, Johnson City, Tenn. BROWN, Betty Burnett, 72 of Salem passed away Tuesday, February 18, 1997. She is survived by a son, Blake Brown; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Bob Preas; grandchildren, Melissa and Jason; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Creed Elliotte; nephews, Charles and Mark. BROWN, Robert Lenwood, 69, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, February 17, 1997. He was born in Roanoke to the late Wilkerson and Estell Smith Brown. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a retired truck driver. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie M. Brown; a sister, Mary Baker, and brothers, Frank, Joseph and Phillip Brown. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Robin Brown Shelton and Mark A. Shelton, and one grandson, Randall X. Shelton, all of Plainfield, N.J.; one sister, Estell Brown Clements of Roanoke; two brothers, Samuel Brown of Plainfield, N.J., and James Brown of Marlboro, Md., and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. CAMPBELL, Curtis Houston, 55, of Fairfield, died Sunday, February 16, 1997, at his residence. Mr. Campbell was born in Rockbridge County on August 9, 1941, and was a son of Josephine Chittum Campbell of Fai rfield and the late Harry Houston Campbell. He was a member of Fairfield United Methodist Church, and worked as an insurance salesman for American General. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Lois B. Campbell; one daughter, Pamela Ann Campbell of Fairfield; two brothers, Ted W. Campbell and R. Kennan Campbell of Fairfield, and one sister, Betty C. Bear of Rural Retreat. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 20, 1997, at the Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Campbell and the Rev. Douglas Gunsalus officiating. CAMPBELL, Laura Peake, 95, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, February 16, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Campbell, five sons and two daughters. She is survived by seven daughters, Elmira Waits, Lillie Brown and Nita Flowers of Roanoke, Minnie White, Laura Carper and Phyllis McClain, and three sons-in-law, James White, Willie Carper and Hugh McClain, all of Washington, D.C., and Rosetta Pannell of Detroit, Mich.; 28 grandchildren; 87 great-grandchildren; 67 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; nieces; nephews; an adopted daughter, Margaret Barbour, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Cedric Malone officiating. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. CIRIOT, Marcella M., passed away on February 17, 1997 at Eldercare Nursing Home, Hillsville, Va. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Fred W. Sokat II of Brownsville, Texas in May 1995. Born in Paterson, New Jersey on April 1, 1915, she was the daughter of Anna and Bert Sokat, and lived for the greater part of her life in Hawthorne and Wyckoff, N.J. She was a graduate of Paterson Central High School, and attended business college thereafter. Her first position was in retailing at Meyer Brothers Department Store in Paterson, N.J. Later, she became supervisor of the Catalogue Department at Sears-Roebuck & Company in Paterson, N.J. which position she held for several years. For the greater part of her working career she was employed as a teller at the New Jersey County Bank and Trust Company, formerly the Paterson Savings Institution, and held that position until her retirement in 1978, at which time she relocated her residence to Hillsville, Virginia. Marcella was a great Patron of the Arts, particularly in the musical field, and supported many musical endeavors, and she will be remembered and missed by many in the musical field. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Werner Tobler (Dorothy) of Hillsville: Niece, Trudi T. Dunham of Roanoke; nephews, Richard W. Tobler of Patrick Springs, Va and Werner R. Tobler of Hillsville; niece, Kathleen Sokat of Stewartsville, N.J. nephew, Fred W. Sokat, III of Tucson, AZ and Thomas Sokat of Sout h Padre Island, Tx.; two great-nieces, Elizabeth V.K. Dunham of Roanoke; and Sally K. Tobler of Patrick Springs, also surviving, as well as a sister-in-law, Frances Sokat of Brownsville, Tx; and many friends. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. prior to a memorial service which will be held at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, Friday evening, February 21, 1997 at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Duane L. Steele of the Gladesboro Lutheran Church officiating. DEAN, Aubrey Elbert, 81, of 947 Ingalls Street, Clifton Forge, died Tuesday, February 18, 1997, at Liberty House Nursing Home. He was born in Charlottesville on July 6, 1915, son of the late Elbert and Louise Wagner Dean. He was the President and Owner of Racey & Dean, Inc., General Insurance and Real Estate, in Clifton Forge, where he was employed for 50 years. He was Past President of Clifton Forge Chamber of Commerce, Clifton Forge Retail Merchants Association, Clifton Forge Lions Club, Past President and Director Emeritus of Clifton Forge Development Corporation, Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings and Loan of Clifton Forge, Past Commander of the local American Legion Chapter, a member of Virginia Association of Realtors, a member of Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia, a charter member of the CFHS Alumni Association, a member of Central United Methodist Church and a retired Major of the 87th Corps of Engineers, Patton's 3rd Army, during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean McGovern Dean of Clifton Forge; three sons, Thomas P. and Mary Anne Day Dean of Clifton Forge, Robert Mark Dean of Hyattsville, Md., and John E. Dean of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Catherine L. Dean of the College of William and Mary, and Kelly C. Dean of the University of Virginia, and one brother and sister-in-law, Edward L. and Mary H. Dean of Clifton Forge. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, February 21, 1997, from the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, with the Rev. W. Pembroke Hall and Father Thomas Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. DUDLEY, James Elwood, 53, of Eagle Rock, died Monday, February 17, 1997. He was survived by his wife Mary Ellen Dudley of Eagle Rock, a son John Dudley of Shawsville; two sisters, Nancy Watkins of Rockbridge County and Rachel Mullins of Buchanan, a brother Everett Dudley of Buchanan. DUNLAP, James Everett, (``Jimmie''), 74, of Moneta, passed away Monday, February 17, 1997, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born July 19, 1922 in Harland County, Ky., a son of the late Joseph Fletcher Dunlap and Loretta Stubblefield Dunlap. He was a member of the Local 540 Plumbers Union Newport News for over 45 years, and retired from Warwick Plumbing and Heating. Jimmie was a member of the Diamond Hill/Emmaus United Methodist Church, Moneta. Before moving to Moneta, he was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Newport News, where he was a Deacon, was on the Board of Elders and Session, and was active with youth organizations. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Maggie Harris Perdue Dunlap; three sons and daughters-in-law, James Daniel and Jeri Dunlap, Newport News, Thomas Ralph and Rachel Perdue, Moneta, Earnest Clay Perdue, Tampa, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda P. and Terry Meadows, Tampa, Fla.; his stepmother, Guidna Dunlap, Montezuma, N.C.; three brothers, Harry Dunlap, Jack Dunlap, both of Alabama, Johnny Dunlap, Richmond; two sisters, Jane Brady, Newport News, Debbie Dunlap, Montezuma, N.C.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild. EAMES, Charlie Vernard, 93, of Christiansburg, died Monday, February 17, 1997, in a Salem nursing home. He was a retired employee of Southland Life Insurance Company. Preceded in death by his wife, Lucille C. Eames, he is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Bettye & William Lane, Roanoke; Fredona Stenger, Morgantown, W, VA; Judy and George Grozdits, Sommerset, Ky; son, D. LAW, Nannie Eva, 88, of Rocky Mount, passed away Monday, February 17, 1997. Born on May 30, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Cora Hodges Turner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben F. Law. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Terry M. and Shirle y Law of Rocky Mount; five grandchildren and their spouses, Teresa Law, Patricia and Ronald Agee, Matthew and Cindy Law, and Mark and Denise Law, all of Rocky Mount, and Jennifer and Jeffrey Coffey of Eagle Rock; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. LINK, James Everett, 75, of the Maybrook Community at Pembroke, died Monday, February 17, 1997 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a long illiness. Born on March 2, 1921 at Maybrook he was a son of the late Levi and Virgie Brum field Link. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife ""Spud"" Evelyn Harrison Link and a brother George Link. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law Henry P. and Charlene Bowman of Ohio; ""Gene"" Adrian E. and Janet G. Link of Blacksburg; Tommy and Janet A. Link of Naples, Fla.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursdau, February 20, 1997 at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke with the Rev. Charles Taylor and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. ROBISON, Margaret T., 60, of Roanoke went to meet her Lord on Monday, February 17, 1997. She is loved and missed by family and friends. Mrs. Robison is retired from Norfolk and Southern. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Richard T. Robison; children, Ric hard T. Robison Jr. (Rick) and wife Victoria, Sandra Robison Sullivan and husband David C., Kirk Elliott Robison and wife Betsy; grandchildren, Andrew Thomas Sullivan, Sarah Margaret Sullivan; step grandson, Shaun Petersen; brothers and sisters, Charles Tichenor and wife Elizabeth, Edith Colley, Albert Tichenor and wife Bertie, Belva Dotson; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 20, 1997 at Oakey's North Chapel with Reverend Michael J. Palmer officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. SAUNDERS, Helen Christine Stilton, 61 of Roanoke passed away Monday, February 17, 1997 in a Roanoke Hospital. Surviving are her husband, William LeRoy Saunders; a son and his wife, Mark and Joan Saunders, Salem; two daughters, Penny Mines, Roanoke, Karla Colona and her husband Keith, Montvale; four grandchildren, Leanna Mines , Kelly Ramsey, Daniel Haupt, and James Rodney Gray; three sisters, Louise Simmons and her husband Richard, Evelyn Harlow, Lorretta Green; three brothers, Jack Stilton and his wife Marie, David Stilton and his wife Voncille, and Walter Stilton. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, February 20, 1997 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Reverend James Milner will officiate. Interment will be in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. SNODGRASS, Margaret, 78, of Valrico, Fla., died Sunday, February 16, 1997, at her residence. A native of Tiltonsville, Ohio, she lived in Roanoke, Va., before coming to the Tampa area in 1980. She was of the Methodist faith and was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Earle Snodgrass of Valrico; two daughters, Karen Snodgrass of Valrico and Judy Wilson of Brandon, Fla.; a brother, Joseph P. Lizon of Benwood, W.Va.; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The Snodgrass family is being served by Stowers Funeral Home, Brandon Chapel, 401 West Brandon Blvd., Brandon, Fla.

Five daughters, Patsy Ogle and Karen Schrum of Elizabeth City, N.C.; Ginger Totten, Jacksonville, Fla.; Terry Kersey, California and Millie Kiem of Virginia Beach, Va; five sisters, Mary Wise of Rio Linda, Calif.; Pat Myers of Bull Shoales, Ark.; Bonnie Pauley, Sacramento, Calif.; Peggy Ranieri of Cleveland, Ohio and Judy Gonzales of Clearmont, Calif.; two brothers, Bradley Pauley of Mariana, Calif.; and Grandy Pauley of Sacremento, Calif.; sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. Williams; her parents, George Lew is West Sr. and Martha Estelle Nesbitt West; a brother, George Lewis West Jr.; and a sister, Anne Carol Terrell. WOODSON, Carl Benjamin, (``Woody""), 73, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 1997. A native of Roanoke, he was retired from General Electric after 25 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Ninth Street Church of the Brethren, and a Bicyclist in Salem for 40 years. Woody served his country in the Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Woodson Caldwell. Survivors include his wife, Janie Brugh Woodson; sons, Carl D. Woodson, Salem, Marshall Woodson, Denver, Colo.; 5 grandchildren, Crystal and Logan Caldwell, Troy, Trevor and Tyler Woodson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Zelda Woodson, Roanoke County, Fred and Lois Woodson, Bobby Woodson, all of Roanoke City; sisters and brothers-in-law, Roberta and Howard Garst, Dorothy and Tommy Hartman, Rachel and Frank Gutherie, Joyce and Lester Reed, all of Roanoke City, Shirley and Marvin Foster, Rosemary and Tom Palmer, all of Vinton, Janice and Ron Sink, Botetourt County.
