Underscoring the increasing influence of the global economy on the United States, the number of Americans working for foreign companies has more than doubled since 1980 to nearly 5 million, a study said Wednesday.
The Organization for International Investment, a Washington trade association for foreign companies with U.S. operations, said the number of Americans working for subsidiaries of foreign firms increased from 2.03 million in 1980 to 4.87 million in 1994, the latest year for which statistics are available.
This represented a 140 percent increase, compared with a gain in total U.S. jobs during this period of 24 percent.
The report said workers at foreign-owned companies received wages that on average were 26 percent higher than wages paid to workers at other U.S. businesses.
``International investment means good-paying jobs for American workers,'' said Richard Goldstein, the chief executive officer of Unilever United States and head of the trade group.
