AIR FORCE CAPTAIN MICHAEL A. MAYES, son of Billie Reid of Salem and Samuel Mayes of Daleville, recently was promoted to his present rank.

Mayes, an executive officer at Charleston Air Force Base, North Charleston, S.C., is a 1988 graduate of Northside High School and a 1992 graduate of Virginia Tech.

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD PVT. AARON W. AKERS, son of Gary and Debbie Akers of Salem, recently graduated from basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Sill, Okla.

Akers is a 1996 graduate of Glenvar High School.

ARMY RESERVE SPC. DIANNE K. HASH, daughter of Margaret King of Buchanan, was a participant in President Clinton's second inauguration on Jan. 20.

Hash is a 1989 graduate of James River High School.

ARMY SGT. FRENCH W. REID, son of Charles Reid of Clifton Forge and Janet Fisher of Eagle Rock, was recently stationed at Fort Belvoir in Fairfax.

Reid is a military police investigator.

ARMY PVT. NICHOLAS J. CURRIER, son of Kenneth and Chinae Currier of Roanoke, recently has completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky.

Currier is a 1996 graduate of Cave Spring High School.
