Self-defense class for women

A women's self-defense class will be offered at the YMCA Central Branch today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The fee is $15 for YMCA members and $20 for nonmembers. For more information, call 342-9622.

Salem YMCA offers scuba class

A Professional Association of Diving Instructors scuba diving class will be offered at the Salem Family YMCA starting March 5 at 7 p.m.

Class will meet for the next five Wednesday evenings.

Four open-water dives are required to complete the course, and those are scheduled, weather permitting, for April 12 and 13.

For YMCA members, the class costs $225; for nonmembers, $250. Cavern diving, dry suit diving and private lessons are also available through the Y.

LOA needs volunteers for companion program

Seniors age 60 and over are needed for LOA's Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs.

In both programs, volunteers will work four hours a day with children or seniors with special needs.

Volunteers receive a nontaxable stipend, assistance with transportation expenses and meals.

Zoo fund-raiser set for Friday

The Mill Mountain Zoo's third annual "Hibernation Hiatus" vacation auction will be held Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Patrick Henry Hotel. The evening will include live jazz by Cool Daddy O's, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. A silent auction will begin at 8 p.m., and a live auction will include donated vacation getaways. Psychiatrist to speak at dinner meeting

Psychiatrist Robert Albanese will speak on "Perspectives on Anger" at the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of the Roanoke Valley's dinner meeting on March 10.

Soccer club signing up members
