A Community Good Friday Service, the first held in the Williamson Road area for many years, is scheduled March 28 from noon to 1 p.m. at Bethany Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 3115 Fleming Ave. N.W. It will include prayer, meditation and special music with leadership also coming from the Greek Orthodox, United Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopal, Church of the Brethren and Southern Baptist congregations serving the area. The offering will benefit outreach ministry of the Williamson Road Clergy Association. Call 366-0968 for more information.
What I Have Learned About Prayer will be the theme of a Wednesday night spiritual growth series to begin March 5 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1837 Deyerle Road S.W. Guest speakers will include: Dr. Marty Woodward, Roman Catholic; Dr. J. Hayden Hollingsworth and Michael Moore, Presbyterians; and Ruth Reynolds, United Methodist. Peace Presbyterian Church, 4365 Cloverdale Road, begins tonight a Lenten series on "Religion and Personality." It will be led by the Rev. Dr. Wilson Gunn, pastor, and the Rev. Theodore Brossoie. Programs begin at 6:30 p.m. and include child care; a soup supper precedes them. The disciplines of religion and psychology will be covered in the discussions.
Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, 4165 Colonial Ave., is sponsoring a spiritual renewal fellowship series, "Fresh Encounters," on Wednesday nights in fellowship hall. The remaining sessions will be held Feb. 29, March 19, and April 2 at 6:30 p.m. A fellowship meal will be held prior to each session.
Cave Spring United Methodist Church, 4515 Hazel Drive S.W., is sponsoring a community Bible study using materials developed by Dr. Maxie Dunnam, author of several books on spiritual growth. Sessions will be Tuesdays at 2:15 p.m. in the church parlor. Call 989-3673 for more information.
Three Lenten studies held on Wednesday nights through March 19 have begun at St. John's Episcopal Church, Elm at South Jefferson in Roanoke. They begin at 6:30 following a 5:30 service and supper. Leaders will be: Bishop F. Neff Powell, the Rev. Robert M. Hamner, the Rev. Dr. Janet Ramsey, the Rev. Thomas O'Dell and Jean Mackey. A Lenten luncheon series starts March 5 at Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, 4165 Colonial S.W. The 50-minute program starting at 12:30 will include messages by the Rev. David Delaney, Lutheran; the Rev. Dr. Philip Motley, Baptist; the Rev. Laney Mofield, Baptist, and the Rev. Tim Huffman, Roman Catholic. An art exhibit is included. Lunch is available for $2.50. Christ Episcopal Church, 1101 Franklin Road S.W., has begun three Lenten classes. They include "The Spirituality of Knitting," "Thinking About Evil" and "The Bible and Handel's `Messiah.''' Leaders will be staff and members of the congregation. The classes, which continue through March 19, begin with prayers at 6 p.m. followed by supper. Two Roman Catholic churches, Our Lady of Nazareth and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, have scheduled the traditional Stations of the Cross devotions each Friday night until Easter. At Our Lady of Nazareth, 2505 Electric Road S.W., the prayers and readings will begin at 6. At Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 314 Turner Road in Salem, 7 is the starting time.

PEOPLE
Gerri McDaniel, a registered nurse active in First Baptist Church of Roanoke, has been employed by the Roanoke Valley Association of Southern Baptists as a parish nurse coordinator. McDaniel, the Virginia Woman's Missionary Union coordinator of parish nursing, is available to help Baptist congregations set up preventive medicine programs for their members and needy residents of their communities. OUTREACH
Two United Methodist churches, Cave Spring and Windsor Hills congregations in Southwest Roanoke County, will jointly build a Habitat for Humanity house beginning in early April. Each congregation currently is raising the needed $10,000 funds. This is the second such joint project.
A trip to Romania to continue the development of a church in the Bals area there is scheduled in August by a group from West Salem and Green Ridge Baptist Churches. The team will assist with both church and medical needs. The churches have already donated to buy a house to be used by the Romanian congregation. St. Paul's Episcopal Church board has approved the formation of an outreach program to enrich the lives of mentally disabled adults living in the Salem area. Known as social clubs, the evening gatherings are staffed by church volunteers and include activities for entertainment and education for persons who live with their families or in boarding houses under the supervision of Blue Ridge Community Services. Several Roanoke Valley churches have sponsored the programs for the past 15 years.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Bethlehem Bible College will celebrate its Founder's Day with a musical program Saturday at 7 p.m. at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1810 Grayson Ave. N.W. The Disciple Gospel Singers, Souls of Faith, the Stewart Jones Ensemble, the Male Chorus of Macedonia Baptist Church and the Senior Choir of First Baptist Church in Elliston will perform.
An evangelism conference sponsored by Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia is scheduled Monday and Tuesday at First Baptist Church, 515 Third St. in downtown Roanoke. Monday sessions will be from 2 to 4:30 and from 6:30 to 9 p.m., with those on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Speaking at the public meeting will be the Rev. Dr. Tom Eliff, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, as well as the Rev. Kenneth Hemphill, the Rev. Ike Reighard, the Rev. Jack Smith, the Rev. St. James Episcopal Church, 4515 Delray St. N.W., will have its monthly alternative worship service March 8 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The service, which includes renewal-style music led by a gospel singer and a nontraditional liturgy, is open especially to the North Roanoke community. Roanoke Friends Meeting is continuing a discussion series, "Basics of Contemporary Quakerism." Valerie Barlow will lead the next session, "Quaker Worship and Ministry," on Sunday. Each one-hour session begins at noon, and will be held in the Gordh Room at Hollins College.
