The Roanoke Bar Association presented a check for $500 to Wayne Harris, superintendent of Roanoke schools, at its December meeting. The money will purchase four CD-ROM computer programs to help high school students prepare for the Scholastic Assessment Test.

*The Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors filled 440 stockings this year for the Salvation Army which distributes over 600 stockings to needy children in the Roanoke area.

The RVAR has been providing stockings to the Salvation Army for more than 25 years, averaging 450 stockings per year.

*WYYD (107.9 FM) and the Kroger Food and Drug Stores have collected 36.1 tons of canned and non-perishable food to benefit the annual "Raise-A-Ton" food drive. The donated food is distributed to area Salvation Army offices.

*David Jones, son of Al and Gaynelle Jones of Salem, recently received the Paul Sylvestre Award from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics for his work as director of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Analysis Center.

In his 15 years on the job, Jones has used statistical analysis to make policy recommendations on a variety of crime issues like prison alternatives, preventing school violence, prison overcrowding and juvenile and adult recidivism.

Last year Jones became the director of program and policy development for the Governor's Crime Commission. He has served as acting executive director of the commission since January 1996.
