RAIDERS NIPPED IN VIS

Caleb Buchanan came up with a huge rebound at the right place and time as Holy Cross (22-10) outlasted North Cross (9-11) 50-48 Thursday in a quarterfinal game of the Virginia Independent Schools tournament at North Cross.

Michael Stoeckle hit a big 3-pointer to tie the score with 23 seconds remaining but Buchanan scored on a stick-back with an offensive rebound at the buzzer for the two-point victory. Bart Wheeler led the Gaels with 16 points.

Stoeckle scored 18 points to lead the Raiders.

In other VIS tournament games:

Covenant 77, Roanoke Valley Christian 59: Brandon Yancey scored 23 points, including six 3-pointers, as Covenant (19-4) advanced to the semifinals with a victory over the Eagles (15-7) at North Cross.

Jason Strickland added 14 points and J.R. Briggs contributed 10 for Covenant. It will face Holy Cross tonight.

Brad Hutchins had 17 points for the Eagles.

Eastern Mennonite 65, Carlisle 56: Dustin Blyer scored 27 points as Eastern Mennonite downed the Chiefs (12-8) at North Cross.

Mennonite outscored Carlisle 22-8 in the first quarter to get off to a good start. Cory Mullet added 16 points for the game. Eastern Mennonite will play Fishburne, a 69-38 winner over Lynchburg Christian, today.

Lamont Franklin scored 21 points to lead the Chiefs.

Wednesday's game

Highland 91, Craig County 66: Bryan Werner and Jacob Hull each reached impressive career milestones as the Rams routed the Rockets in a Pioneer District quarterfinal game in Monterey.

Highland (15-5) will play in the semifinals tonight at 7:30 at Dabney-Lancaster Community College.

Werner scored 25 points and passed the 1,000 point mark for his career, while Hull, who dished out 18 assists and scored 18 points, went over 500 career assists. Josh Purdue added 14 points and Tommy O'Hearn 11 for the Rams.

Mike Fisher led Craig County (1-15) with 21 points.
