The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a contract worth nearly $4.5 million Thursday to Branch Highways Inc. of Roanoke for construction of a bypass on Virginia 122 near Moneta in Bedford County.
Construction will begin next month.
The project will carry traffic around Moneta to eliminate delays and safety problems related to the road's intersection with Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. Virginia 122 connects Rocky Mount with Bedford and provides access to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Smith Mountain Lake.
The bypass will run west of the existing highway, beginning 1.2 miles north of the railroad crossing and ending 0.6 mile south of the crossing, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. A bridge will carry traffic over the railroad tracks.
The board also awarded a $272,550 contract to J&D Construction Co. of Hillsville for construction of right-turn lanes and center left-turn lanes on Virginia 24 at its intersection with Virginia 755 west of Chamblissburg.
The state will pay the same company $215,278 to build turning lanes on Virginia 40 near Union Hall in Franklin County at the intersection of Virginia 819 and Virginia 794.
