BROWN, Robert Lenwood, 69, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, February 17, 1997. He was a member of the Alleghany Dunbar #109 F & A Masons. CAMPBELL, Laura Peake, 95, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, February 16, 1997. Funeral services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Rev. CARTER, Edward Lee Sr., 75, of Moneta, died Thursday, February 20, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Washington, Pa. on February 5, 1922, a son of the late Albert Carter and Chloa McDougal Carter. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Teresa S. Carter; two sons, Edward Lee Carter Jr., Moneta, Raymond Douglas Carter, Cecil, Pa.; a brother, Emory S. Carter, Washington, Pa.; a sister, Eldine C. Johns, Washington, Pa.; four grandchildren, Edward Carter, Christine Carter, Devon Carter, and Logan Carter. Services will be held at a later time. CLEMENT, Tiffany Leigh 44, died Tuesday, February 11, 1997 as a result of an automobile accident in Clarendon County, S.C. EUBANK, Benjamin Moore, Sr., of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, February 19,1997 at Lewis-Gale Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Eubank was a respected member of the area's business community, a military veteran, and a dedicated family man. He was president of Hesse and Hurt Inc., a painting contracting firm, for 35 years. He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Army and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. While meeting the strenuous demands of an independent businessman and the equally strenuous demands of a military career, Mr. Eubank was the beloved father of nine children. He is survived by his wife, Ila Peters Eubank; and his children, Carol Eubank Forbes of Ramsey, N.J., Beverly Eubank Ayscue of Raleigh, N.C., Gail Blount Galvan of Woodbridge, Va.., Marian Leigh Blount of Roanoke, Ann Eubank Kampfmueller of Virginia Beach, Joan Elizabeth Eubank of New York City, Jennifer Eubank Willis of Woodbridge, Va., Marguerite Mary Eubank of Baltimore, and Benjamin Moore Eubank, Jr. of Richmond. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer Madge Forbes, Crawford Alexander Forbes, Eleanore Amy Ayscue, Christopher Gene Ayscue, Christopher Meade Kampfmueller, Graham Lewis Kampfmueller, Zoe Elizabeth Willis and David Alvaro Galvan. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Valorie Peters MacInnis, her husband, Stewart, and their two children, Ellen Catherine and John Michael, all of Roanoke. He was formerly married to Betty Shank Blount of Roanoke. He was predeceased by his first wife, Eleanore Madge Smith Eubank. Mr. Eubank was born in Chase Cit y, Va. Following wartime service in the Army, he worked in Richmond. He moved to Roanoke in 1948. His funeral will be at noon on Saturday, February 22, 1997 at Christ Lutheran Church, with interment following at Evergreen Cemetery. GIBBS, James Warren, 73, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, February 19, 1997 at the VA Medical Center, Salem. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Jones Gibbs; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Virginia Gibbs, John Gibbs, all of Roanoke; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Ronald Hannah, Salem, Barbara Warren, Roanoke, Karen and Jerry Atkins, Roanoke; one brother and sister-in-law, Reece and Polly Gibbs, Collinsvill e; nine grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews. HUDSON, Leonard Preston Sr., 75, of Roanoke, and formerly of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 1997, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem. He was born December 20, 1921 in Eagle Rock, a son of the late Hobert Hudson Sr. and Bessie Duncan Hudson. He was a retired educator with the Bedford County School System, having received his Master's Degree from the University of Virginia, was a member of the Liberty Masonic Lodge #95, a World War II Army veteran and ex-POW, and was a member of the First Christian Church, Roanoke. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Gardner Hudson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and James Thompson Jr., Roanoke, Barbara and Keith Treadway, Altavista; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Leonard P. Hudson Jr., Roanoke, Robert C. and Anne Hudson, Bedford; a sister, Hilda Dudley, Eagle Rock; three brothers, Lawrence A. Hudson, Norfolk, Kenneth Hudson, Bedford, Douglas Hudson, New Orleans, La.; a brother-in-law who was like a son, Thomas C. HYLTON, Virginia Hodges, (``Kitty""), 64, of Smith Mtn. Lake, formerly of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, February 20, 1997. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and is survived by her husband of 46 years, Lawrence E. Hylton; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Pam Hylton, Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary (Sissie) and Randy Thurman, Hardy, Julie and Richard Vance, Vinton; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Beth-Anne Hylton, Lauren and Thomas Thurman, Katie, Josh, and Luke Vance; sister, Betsy Atkinson, Alexandria; stepfather, Mason L. JOHNSON, Goldie Armstrong, 88, of Staunton, died Tuesday, February 18, 1997, at the Oak Hill Nursing Home. She was born in Collierstown on April 4, 1908, daughter of the late Howard G. and Ida Mae Morris Armstrong. She was a retired registered nurse for the C. & O. Hospital, a member of the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, Ladies Bible Class and Church circle, member of the C. & O. Nurses Alumni. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard V. Johnson in 1974, and is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Harry (Ashley) Lucas of Blacksburg, Mrs. Moeton (Coreta) Agnor of Fairfield, and Mrs. Wade (Glendon) Scott of Clifton Forge; a brother, William Howard Armstrong of Kent, Conn.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, 2 p.m., from the Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge, with Rev. Brad Langdon officiating, interment to follow. LAUTH, Amy Elizabeth, 28, of Roanoke, beloved daughter of Mary Elyn Mc Nichols and Laurence Lauth, devoted friend and sister of Larry Lauth, Jr. and Laura Elyn Lauth, died Tuesday, February 18, 1997 at her college residence in Chapel Hill, N.C. Amy also leaves her stepfather, Robert Mc Nichols; stepmother, Zoila Lauth; stepbrother, Wade Mc Nichols; grandmothers, Mary Gregory and Kerrie Lauth; grandfather, Ralph Gregory; her devoted dog, Georgie; special friends, Kim Dolby and Gayle Danielsen; and many, many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will greatly feel her loss. Amy's greatest joy in life was people. She made it her mission and life's work to support and love those around her. She is not gone, but lives on in the people whose lives she has changed. She lived her life without limitations measured not by what she couldn't do, but rather by what she did. LOVERN, Shirley Melvin, 58, of Christiansburg, died Wednesday, February 19, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born on June 10, 1938 in Ellett, and was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Lovern. He is survived by his wife, Frances Lovern, Christiansburg; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley Lovern, and Elizabeth and Ronald Twiggs, all of Christiansburg; four sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Lee and Jennifer Lovern, Clifton and Barbara Lovern, all of Christiansburg, Donnie and Loretta Lovern, Pilot, and Calvin Lovern, Blacksburg; seven grandchildren, Ashley Marie, Felicia Ann, Joann, Tasha, Becky, Robyn, and A.J.; his mother, Virginia Cromer Lovern, Blacksburg; three sisters, Pat Linkous, Laura Estes, both of Blacksburg, and Linda Linkous, Christiansburg; four brothers, Sonnie Lovern, Dewey Lovern, Wardie Lovern, all of Blacksburg, and Tony Lovern, Shawsville. MARSHALL, Mae Dishon, 87, of Radford, passed away Thursday morning, February 20, 1997, at Wheatland Hills Nursing Care at Radford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Marshall; sons-in-law, Jack Shepard and Curtis Lester. Surviving are two sons, Monroe Marshall and fiancee, Gloria Anderson, Christiansburg, Paul and Loretta Marshall of Radford; three daughters, Ella Mae Shepard, Roanoke, Peggy Lester, Floyd, Dollie and Wayne Lester, Christiansburg; eleven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. MOORE, Virginia Staley McCue, 77, of Elkin, N. C., died Tuesday, February 18, 1997. Mrs. Moore was born in Roanoke, Va. July 26, 1919, a daughter of Robert and Dicie Mathis Staley. She was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by the chil dren's father, Edward L. McCue, and her husband, Lucien M. Moore. Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Lewis, Norfolk; two sons, Robert McCue, Mocksville, N. C., James W. McCue, Palm Coast, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Denise McCue, Robert McCue, Kelly McCue, Steven Lewis, Mark Lewis, Erin McCue, Tracey McCue, Sherry McCue, Jill McCue; one great-granddaughter, Abigail McCue. QUESENBERRY, William David, 73, of Radford, passed away Thursday, February 20, 1997, at the Veterans Hospital in Salem. He was a member of Rockford United Methodist Church, and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired Superintendent for the H. T. Bowling Construction Company, with over 25 years of service. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael D. Quesenberry. Survivors include his wife, Pauline G. Quesenberry; one daughter, Sandi Q. Wilson of Christiansburg; four brothers, George Quesenberry of Timonium, Md., Ralph Quesenberry of Christiansburg, Freddy Quesenberry of Salem, and Clyde Quesenberry of Hillsville; four sisters, Esther Cannaday of Largo, Fla., Mary Troutt of Shawsville, Jean Trump of Elliston, and Joyce Jones of King, N.C. RAMSEY, William Claude, 68, of Buena Vista, died Wednesday, February 19, 1997, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born August 23, 1928 in Nelson County, son of the late William Ramsey and Clarie Tyler Ramsey. Mr.. Ramsey was a U.S. Air Force veteran, and a member of Victory Baptist Church. He was retired from Bonded Fibers after many years of service. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel J. Ramsey and Roy Lee Ramsey; and one sister, Alice Cox. He is survived by his wife, Rose Ann Coleman Ramsey; his mother, Clarie Ramsey; two sons, William Tex Ramsey and Charles C. Ramsey, both of Buena Vista; four daughters, Pamela Jean Hall of Buena Vista, Betty Joe Miller of Staunton, Patricia Wager of Florida, and Gwendolyn Ramsey of North Carolina; two stepsons, Manuel Dafonseca and Frank Dafonseca, both of Buena Vista; three brothers, Grover Ramsey of Vesuvius, Delmas Ramsey, and Lawrence W. RATCLIFFE, David L., (``Dave""), 84, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 1997. He served his country in the Army Air Force during World War II. Mr. Ratcliffe retired as a pipe fitter after 60 years of service. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, David G. Ratcliffe, Robert L. and Joyce Ratcliffe; stepdaughter, Betty G. Simpson, Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nep hews, Marvin A. Ratcliffe Jr., John M. Ratcliffe, Perrysburg, Ohio; several nieces and cousins. He was a retired United Methodist Minister, having served many churches in The Holston Conference for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Louise C. Robbins, Radford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Phil and Patty Robbins, Big Stone Gap, and David and Susan Robbins of Richmond; one sister, Fern Robinson and her husband, Joe, of Jonesville; two brothers, Calvin Robbins, Dalton, Ga., and Coolidge Robbins, Arlington, Texas; six grandchildren, Andy and his wife, Misty, Wes, Brad, Leigh, Alex, and Ann Bradley Robbins. SCYPHERS, Gay Cumbow, 75, of Abingdon, died Wednesday, February 19, 1997, at her home. She was a native of Russell County and had lived most of her life in Washington County. She was a member of the Greendale Chapel, and was a former employee of People, Inc. She is survived by her husband, Reece Scyphers; three sons, Evans Scyphers, Marion, Cecil Scyphers, Abingdon, David Scyphers, Abingdon; two daughters, Mrs. Delores Jones, Roanoke, Mrs. Patty Cochran, Abingdon; two brothers, J. W. Cumbow, Rural Retreat, Ronald Cumbow, Atkins; four sisters, Mrs. Pauline Holmes, Abingdon, Mrs. Alice Cumbow, Bristol, Mrs. Jean Thompson, Greer, S.C., Mrs. Dorothy ReMine, Roanoke; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services for Mrs. Gay Cumbow Scyphers will be conducted Friday, February 21, 1997, at 4 p.m. in the Greendale Chapel with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Greendale Chapel, P.O. Box 1314, Abingdon, Va. 24212. Mrs. Scyphers was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Cumbow. Farris Funeral Service is serving the family of Mrs. Scyphers.

SIMMONS, Virginia Louise, 71, of Roanoke passed away, Wednesday, February 19, 1997. Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Ramona Simmons, 1993. Surviving are her husband, Stanley C. Simmons; brother and sister-in-law, Willard (Sonny) and Josephine Jones, Roanoke; sisters and brothers-in-law, Essie Mae and Jess Reed, Marie Jones, Dorothy and Nelson Walters, all of Christiansburg; mother-in-law, Stella Simmons, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conduct ed at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 12 noon Saturday, February 22, 1997 with Rev. Don Summerville officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. STAFFORD, MARY ELIZABETH, 72, of the Celco Heights Area near Narrows, died Wednesday, February 19,1997, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a long illness. Born in Giles County, Va. on June 10, 1924, she was a daughter of the lat e Benton Wiley and Pearl Griner Williams. Surviving are her husband, John J. Stafford; a son, John W. Stafford of Ripplemead; two grandchildren, Lisa S. Martin of Narrows and Mike Stafford of Bland; one great-grandchild, Kelley Martin of Narrows; two sisters, Lucille W. Collins of Pembroke and Jo Mae W. Marshall of Narrows; two brothers, Rudolph Williams of Pearisburg and Douglas M. Williams, of Phoenix, Ariz. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Burchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening.

WRIGHT, Walter Wise, 70, of Rt. 7, Bedford, died Thursday, February 20,1997 at his residence. He was born in Bedford County on August 15, 1926, a son of the late Elmo Wright and Jennie Smith Wright. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda W. Wright, two half brothers, Elmo Jackson Wright and Ashby Edward Wright, two half sisters, Maude W. Riley and Sally W. Lewis. He was an Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He is survived by five brothers, Bobby G. Wright, Stafford, Albert J. Wright, William K. Wright, Charles E. Wright and James C. Wright, all of Bedford; two half sisters, Dorothy W. Link, Bedford, Ruth W. Hartman, Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 1997 at Virginia Memorial Park, with the Rev. Dr. David L. Henderson officiating. Memorials may be made to the Bedford Life Saving Crew. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.
