The Season of Lent, from Ash Wednesday through March 29, is a time of renewal for Christian people and a time of spiritual preparation for Easter in remembrance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lenten services at various times of the week offer opportunities for introspection and Bible study. The events listed below are open to the community.

Christ Episcopal Church, 144 N. Washington Ave., Pulaski, is having "Dessert and Discussion" programs on Sundays, 6:30-8 p.m. during the Lenten season. The book "How Good Do We Have to Be?" by Harold Kushner will be discussed this Sunday.

The annual Radford/Floyd Cluster Lenten Services will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at New Mount Olive United Methodist Church, Russell Avenue, Radford. The Rev. Lawrence Nuckolls, pastor of the Floyd circuit, will preach, and the Radford University Wesley Foundation Choir will provide special music.

Lenten Sunday Evenings begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 220 West Main St., Christiansburg. A program entitled "God's Psychiatry: Gems of Living from the Bible" will be presented each Sunday evening of Lent.

Noon Lenten Worship services offer a time of prayer, Scripture reading and meditation at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Prices Fork and Toms Creek roads, on March 5, 12, 19, 27 and 28.

"Proclaim Jubilee! A Spirituality for the 21st Century" is the theme of the Ecumenical Lenten Program in Blacksburg. Bringing together the members of Luther Memorial Lutheran, Christ Episcopal, St. Mary's Roman Catholic, Blacksburg Presbyterian and Blacksburg United Methodist, the program continues Wednesday at Blacksburg United Methodist, Church and Lee streets. Each Wednesday evening through March 19 a free meal will be served at 6 p.m. before the service at the host congregation. Host congregations and dates are: March 5, Luther Memorial Lutheran, Prices Fork and Toms Creek roads; March 12, Christ Episcopal, Church and Jackson streets; and March 19, Blacksburg Presbyterian, Church and Eakin streets.

The Lenten Lunch Fellowship in Christiansburg for Friday will take place at St. Peter's Anglican Catholic Church, 230 West First St., beginning at noon with a soup and sandwich lunch. Psalm 148 will be considered for the worship period, following the theme, "Anything New in the Psalms?"

The Rev. E. Glenn Hinson, professor of spirituality and John F. Loftis professor of church history at Baptist Theological Seminary, Richmond, will be the guest speaker for the three-day 1997 Lenten Event Program in Radford. Hinson served on the World Council of Churches and is the author of "A Serious Call to a Contemplative Lifestyle."
The program begins with a worship service at 6:30 p.m. March 2 at The Presbyterian Church of Radford, 201 Fourth St. A brown bag lunch will be held at noon on March 3 at St. Jude's Catholic Church, Tyler and Calhoun streets. Christ Lutheran Church, Second and Harvey streets, will host a program that night at 7, and Grace Episcopal Church, Fourth and Harvey streets, will have the concluding program on March 4 at 7 p.m.
