* The Radford School Board agreed to a new, combined world history and geography class for the high school, but not without some reservations by at least two members Thursday.
"You're dumbing down the curriculum when you simplify it like this," said board Chairman Chip Craig. For half of the school year, the new class will cover world history from the year 1000; the other half will cover geography. Previously, said Principal Buddy Martin, students were only required to take a year of one subject or the other. Now, new state standards of learning will test both world history and geography in the 11th grade.
Martin said a majority of students now enroll in geography, and less than 3 percent take both subjects. With the change, said Vice Chairman Carter Effler, at least every student will be exposed to both.
* Dublin Town Council has extended the federal government's option on a proposed site in the Dublin Town Center for a new post office. The government's option actually had already expired at the end of 1996, but the extra 120 days approved by council Thursday night will take it through April. A new post office, to replace the 4,000-square-foot building in downtown Dublin, is a key component for the Town Center.
Upcoming:
* The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Monday on the third floor of the courthouse in Christiansburg. The meeting will include a joint public hearing with the Planning Commission on a request to rezone about 30 acres from agricultural to residential status on Harding and Mill Pointe roads for a second phase of Lusters Mill subdivision.
The supervisors will go into work session after the public hearing to hear a presentation of the proposed county budget for fiscal year 1998 and to set dates for future work sessions to consider the budget.
* The Radford City Council will hold the first of two public hearings on Monday to receive comments on proposed improvements to the central business district. The hearing will open council's regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building, 619 Second St. The improvements, which represent a collaborative effort on the part of business leaders and city officials, were detailed at a special council meeting on Jan. 20. Monday's hearing and another on March 10 will help the city qualify for Virginia Community Development Block Grant funding.
