RITES OF SPRING BEGIN EARLY AT TECH

A sure sign of the coming of spring was exposed - three times - in the heart of the Virginia Tech campus this week.

Capt. Jody Falls said police got a report at 2:30 a.m. Thursday that three women were streaking naked across the Tech Drillfield, under the beams of the nearly full moon.

The person who reported the incident told police that a jeep stopped at one end of the Drillfield and three women jumped out and ran to the middle. The women then quickly disrobed and ran back to the jeep wearing smiles - but nothing more.

A Tech officer stopped the jeep and found its occupants clothed and smelling of alcohol. But none appeared drunk, Falls said.

Tech police made a judicial referral in the case, which means any discipline would come from within the university system.

Falls said another student was disciplined about a month ago when he streaked across the auditorium in McBryde Hall. The two streaking incidents are the first ones in recent memory, Falls said.
