NEWMAN'S PHARMACY

Owner: Jay Newman

Location: 4027 Riner Road, between the Riner Food Center and the post office in Riner.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday

About the Business: Newman's pharmacy offers complete pharmaceutical products along with some off-the-shelf medicines, personal items and greeting cards. The pharmacy can special order items it does not have. Newman said his prices are competitive.

Opening: The business is already open and seeing steady business. Its grand opening is scheduled for Wednesday through March 8, and will feature specials on diabetic supplies, and cough and cold items, and the awarding of a color television. A drive-through window will be installed soon.

About the Owner: Newman previously was a pharmacist at Kmart in Christiansburg for four years. He had always wanted to open his own business and chose Riner because he likes rural areas and enjoys spending time with his customers. "I've got time here to talk and get to know my customers, where I couldn't do that in other environments." He thinks independent pharmacies may be coming back in to vogue to serve targeted markets.

Education:He received his pharmacy degree from the Medical College of Virginia.

Family: Newman is married to the former Kim Wright of Christiansburg. They have a 3-year-old son, Taylor.

Community involvement:Newman was one of several new faces who ran unsuccessfully in last May's hard-fought election for a seat on the Christiansburg Town Council.
