Body identified as that of missing florist

STUARTS DRAFT - Police on Saturday identified the body of a woman found near the Augusta County sewage plant as that of Dawn Snyder, a 22-year-old Stuarts Draft florist missing for more than two weeks.

Sheriff Glenn Lloyd would not say how the woman died, but said there were no indications that she was sexually assaulted. He said police had no suspects.

A local resident stumbled across the body Friday morning in a field, not far from the shop where Snyder disappeared. The body was sent to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for autopsy. Lloyd said police used dental records and personal items found on the body to establish the identification.

Snyder disappeared the evening of Feb. 5 from the flower shop she co-owned. She was last heard from around 8:15 p.m. Twenty minutes later, a delivery driver found the back door of the shop open and Snyder gone.

Snyder's car was in the parking lot with keys in the ignition and her purse on a front seat.

Dog recovering from 2 arrow wounds

ASHLAND - A mixed-breed dog named Jake is being treated by a neurologist after one arrow passed through his body and another pierced his skull.

Jake, a Jack Russell terrier and beagle mix, was shot Wednesday afternoon not far from his home in Ashland, police said.

The struggling dog was found in his back yard by his owner, Carrie Boyd.

``When he came into the back yard, an arrow was in his skull,'' she said. ``He could hardly walk.''

Ashland police and Hanover Animal Control determined that the dog was shot in the back yard of nearby apartments. They are still investigating the incident.

He was being treated Saturday at the Virginia Tech Veterinary Medicine School in Blacksburg, a receptionist there said. The hospital did not release the dog's condition.
