ANDERSON SHUTS DOWN OHIO U. 1-0

Jason Anderson pitched a seven-inning shutout and Brad Hoffman knocked in the only run as Radford beat Ohio University 1-0 in the first game of a college baseball doubleheader Saturday at Dedmon Center Park.

Radford completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the second game.

Anderson (1-1), a junior left-hander from Glenvar High School, gave up five hits, struck out four and walked one for Radford (5-1). The lone run came in the second, when Hoffman followed Jim Thomas' two-out double with a single.

A four-run second inning propelled the Highlanders in the second game. Radford's Tim Manwiller (1-1) struck out six and gave up two earned runs in six innings on seven hits. Thomas had two hits in each game for Radford, which plays Ohio (0-2) at noon today.

* Virginia Tech shortstop Kevin Kurilla tripled and scored in the top of the 13th inning as the Hokies defeated Campbell University 6-5 in Buies Creek, N.C.

Following a one-out intentional walk, pinch-hitter Andy Hayes grounded to second to score Kurilla with the eventual game-winner. Senior left-hander Blake Clancy (1-0) came on in the 10th and pitched four shutout innings to pick up the victory for Tech (2-0).

The Hokies led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, when the Camels (3-8) stormed back and tied the score on a two-run home run by Dustin Brundage with one out.

Jason Badcock hit a two-run homer in the game for Tech, and Chad Foutz (Franklin County) went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

* Georgia Southern pounded out 21 runs in the first game and used solid pitching in the second to sweep a Southern Conference doubleheader from VMI at Patchin Field in Lexington.

Nine Eagles drove in runs as Georgia Southern pasted the Keydets 21-6 in the opener. VMI's Franco Martin hit his first homer of the season and drove in four runs to pace the Keydets.

In the second game, three pitchers combined to fire a five-hitter as the Eagles won 5-1.

VMI (3-7 overall, 0-2 conference) and Georgia Southern (4-6, 2-0) play the final game of the series at 1 p.m. today.

TRACK Maroons win ODAC title

Bridgewater ended Lynchburg's seven-year reign as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's indoor track and field champions, and Roanoke College won its first ODAC women's track title on Saturday at the conference championships at VMI.

Bridgewater compiled 89.5 points to Lynchburg's 80.5. Washington and Lee was third, with 41 points, followed by Roanoke and Eastern Mennonite, with 13 each.

The Eagles swept the top men's individual honors as Scott Brown was named Athlete of the Year and Shane Stevens was selected Coach of the Year.

In the women's meet, Roanoke wracked up 73 points to edge W&L, which finished with 68.5. Bridgewater was third with 37.5, followed by Lynchburg (34) and Eastern Mennonite with 4.

The Maroons won titles in four events. Sandy Wilson (55-meter dash), Leahann Agee (high jump) and Shelli Stevens (55 hurdles) took individual crowns, while Roanoke won the 400 relay. Roanoke's Finn Pincus was women's Coach of the Year, while Bridgewater's Tammy Russell was Athlete of the Year.

* In Johnson City, Tenn., Marshall won its first men's title at the Southern Conference indoor championships. Marshall finished with 117 points to outdistance Appalachian State, which was second, with 107. VMI, the defending champion, placed fifth, with 55 points. The Keydets were led by Joe Anwah, who took the 55 hurdles with a time of 7.65 seconds. VMI's Obi Ekekwe, claimed the triple jump with a leap of 15.22 meters.

Western Carolina won the women's indoor championship with 143 points.

HIGH SCHOOLS Byrd 2nd in region

Jefferson Forest defeated William Byrd 16-14, 15-5 to win the Region III volleyball crown at Tunstall High School and advance to the Group AA meet.

The Cavaliers (22-0) will play host to the Region IV runner-up, while the Terriers (17-6) will travel to the Region IV champion. Both matches are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Salem wrapped up its season with a 13-4 record after falling to Jefferson Forest 11-15, 16-14, 15-2 in a semifinal match. Tunstall, which lost to William Byrd 15-10, 15-7 in the other semifinal, finished the season 17-3.

* The Cave Spring girls finished ninth at the Group AAA swim meet in Oakton. Jamie Trivett had the Knights' highest finish, with a fourth in the 100 freestyle and Ashley Neighbors finished eighth in the 100 breast stroke. West Springfield won both the boys' and girls' competitions. The top finisher for Patrick Henry was Charlie Hunter, who placed 13th in the boys' 100 backstroke.

ETC. Tech swimmers 2nd in Atlantic-10

Jen Finotti won the 200-meter backstroke in 2:04.46 to lead the Virginia Tech women's swimming and diving team to a second-place finish at the Atlantic 10 championships in Buffalo.

Freshman Jessica Riston set a school mark by completing the 200 breast stroke in 2.22.58 for second place.

Freshmen Katie Booth and Karen Gerrior also captured second-place finishes as the Hokies secured their best conference championships finish since the 1980-81 season. Booth finished the 1,650 freestyle in a personal best 17:03.99, while Gerrior needed 2:06.99 to complete the 200 butterfly.

On the men's side, the Hokies placed eight swimmers in the finals and took sixth place for the second consecutive year.

Senior Jason Schadle finished a personal best 16:10.36 for fifth place in the 1,650 freestyle, while junior J Wong swam the 200 butterfly in 1:54.77 for fifth place.

* W&L's women had 480 points continued to lead the ODAC/Atlantic States Swimming championships after two days of competition in Radford. Catawba was second, with 244.

Freshman Brooke Stanley set a school record for the Generals, winning the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 0.24 seconds. Margaret Hoehl won the 200 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relay team also finished first for W&L..

* Laura Jewett fired a four-hitter and had two hits as Radford beat Carson-Newman 6-2 in the first game of a softball doubleheader in Jefferson City, Tenn. Macy Price added a single and a double for Radford (1-1), which dropped the second game 2-1 on an error in the eighth inning despite Sheree Fletcher's two-hitter.

* In Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Washington & Lee freshman Chad Casto dropped a second round consolation match at 126 pounds on Saturday to finish 1-2 at the NCAA East Regional wrestling championships at King's College.

Elizabethtown's Jamie Hollinger decisioned Casto 15-3. Casto completed his first year with a 15-9 record.

* Hollins won the Virginia Intercollegiate women's fencing championship at Virginia Tech.
