BATH CO. CAPTURES PIONEER TITLE

Adam Grist scored 23 points Saturday and hit some key free throws in the final minute as Bath County captured the Pioneer District championship with a 48-45 win over James River in Clifton Forge.

Grist, who was 11-of-12 from the line, scored the game's last three points from the charity stripe for Bath County (14-8), which advanced to the Region C tournament.

James River (11-12) tied the score at 45 when Grist hit a free throw to put the Chargers back up by one with 1:23 to play. The Cavaliers then wound the clock down, but missed a 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds left. Grist connected on two more foul shots with 7.5 seconds to play to seal the win.

Travis Blankenship led James River with 18 points.

State Catholic

Catholic 83, Roanoke Catholic 61: Catholic High School pulled away in the second quarter en route to a victory over the Celtics in the consolation round.

The Celtics (7-17) were led by Aki Al-Zubaidi's 16 points, while Terron Reed, Chad Wall and Phillip Morris all had 10.

Blue Ridge girls

Roanoke Valley Christian 55, Holy Cross 36: Gina Guthrie scored 14 points and had 11 assists as the Eagles knocked off the state's top-ranked private school team in the finals of the Blue Ridge Conference tournament at RVC.

The Eagles (24-4), the state's fifth-ranked team, open state tournament play at home Tuesday against an undetermined opponent.

Grace Christian 44, North Cross 27: Krista Summers scored 20 points to lead Grace Christian past the Raiders in a Blue Ridge Conference consolation game at Roanoke Valley Christian.

Michele Hamilton had 14 points and 23 rebounds for North Cross (12-8).
