BATH CO. CAPTURES PIONEER TITLE

Adam Grist scored 23 points Saturday and hit some key free throws in the final minute as Bath County captured the Pioneer District championship with a 48-45 win over James River in Clifton Forge.

Grist, who was 11-of-12 from the line, scored the game's last three points from the charity stripe for Bath County (14-8), which advanced to the Region C tournament.

James River (11-12) tied the score at 45 when Grist hit a free throw to put the Chargers back up by one with 1:23 to play. The Cavaliers then wound the clock down, but missed a 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds left. Grist connected on two more foul shots with 7.5 seconds to play to seal the win.

Travis Blankenship led James River with 18 points.

Piedmont

Laurel Park 51, Fieldale-Collinsville 45: The Lancers held the Cavaliers to four third-quarter points en route to the Piedmont District championship at Bassett.

Laurel Park (15-7), which advances to the Region IV tournament with the victory, led 23-20 at the half before outscoring Fieldale-Collinsville 11-4 in the third quarter.

Jeff Slade scored 18 points to lead the Lancers, while Eric Jones added 13.

Phillip Hairston scored 11 and Marco Taylor added 10 for the Cavaliers (10-13).

ODACS

Gateway Christian 84, Greater Beckley 65: The Crusaders used a 26-9 run in the second quarter to propel them to a third-place finish in the Old Dominion Association of Church Schools tournament in Beckley, W.Va.

Alan Surface scored 22 points to lead five Gateway Christian players in double figures. Scott Perfader scored 15, while Chris Kirtner, Brad Duncan, and Andrew Smith all had 14 for the Crusaders.

Josh Anderson led Greater Beckley with 20 points.
