DISPUTE ENDS IN SLAYING

ROANOKE COUNTY NEIGHBORS say the victim and suspect were friends.

A Roanoke County man has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of another Roanoke County man after an argument early Sunday.

Paskel "Pete" W. Tinsley Jr., 56, was charged with shooting 37-year-old Rick Knoebel. The slaying, the county's second this year, took place about 4 a.m. in Tinsley's brown two-story A-frame home on Rocky Road near the Bottom Creek area of Bent Mountain, according to Roanoke Police Detective S.C. Sturgill.

There were no other witnesses and Knoebel died at the scene, Sturgill said. Police said an argument led to the shooting, but gave no details, saying only that it was not alcohol- or drug-related.

The men were friends, but not close, Sturgill said. Neighbors said both men usually kept to themselves but had reputations for being occasionally rowdy.

Knoebel worked at Quibell Corp.'s Roanoke bottling plant and rented a home about a mile from Tinsley's, neighbors said. Some described him as a large, soft-spoken man who liked to work on his three cars in his spare time.

Tinsley is unemployed, said his sister, Martha Peverall. He is being held without bond in the Roanoke County Jail.
