FRANKLIN CO. WRESTLERS 3RD IN NW REGION IN THE REGION

Franklin County finished third Saturday night in the Northwest Region wrestling tournament at Halifax County High School and qualified seven wrestlers for the Group AAA meet.

The Eagles finished with 168 points, nine behind winner C.D. Hylton of Woodbridge. Stonewall Jackson of Manassas took second place, with 174.5 points. Woodbridge was fourth, with 137.5 points, and Cave Spring (102) took fifth place.(Complete results in Scoreboard. B5)

Stacy Menefee won the 103-pound class and Bruce Cobbs captured the championship in the heavyweight division for Franklin County. Ivan Trotter (145 pounds) and Corey Witcher (215) took second place, while Will Powers was third in the 140-pound division and Thomas Parmelee (189) and Matt Conklin (130) each earned fourth-place honors.

Cave Spring's Damon Daniels won the 215-pound class to lead four Knights to the state meet. Shawn O'Hargan (130) and Matt Berger (275) finished second, and Adam Maneen secured a third-place finish in the 152-pound class.

William Fleming, which finished 17th in the meet, qualified Maurice Lacy (125), who finished third and was knocked from the unbeaten ranks. Patrick Henry was 23rd.

The Group AAA meet is Friday and Saturday at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake.

COLLEGES Radford falls in baseball

Jason Arbinger's RBI single gave Ohio University the lead, and the Bobcats went on to defeat Radford 6-4 in a baseball game in Radford (5-2).

Georgia Southern scored a pair of runs in the second inning, four in the third and three in the fourth to build a 9-0 lead, then held off VMI 15-11 in a Southern Conference baseball game in Lexington.

Scott Thompkins had three hits for VMI (3-8 overall, 0-3 conference), including a home run, and David Dixon had a grand slam.

ETC. Sports club features Tech aides

The Roanoke Valley Sports Club will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday in the Salem Civic Center Community Room. Guest speakers will be Virginia Tech assistant head football coach Billy Hite and Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster.

The session begins with a social at 5:45 p.m., followed by a dinner and meeting at 6:15. Cost to members is $10 per person. Nonmembers may attend and for $25 will be registered for a membership that runs through June 30.

George Probst of Blacksburg won the 5K Fun Run in Williamsburg in 14 minutes, 54 seconds. The run was part of the 17th annual Anheuser-Busch Colonial Half-Marathon on William and Mary's campus.
