One in four Roanoke area employers intends to hire more workers during the April-June quarter, a new survey predicted.
Also, 10 percent of the region's employers plan job cuts and the rest plan no changes, according to a job market forecast released Monday by Manpower Inc., a Milwaukee, Wis., temporary employment company. The company, which operates offices of its Manpower Temporary Services in Bedford, Roanoke and Salem, surveys an undisclosed number of employers locally and nationally and releases the results in quarterly reports.
Figures for the Roanoke area showed that job openings will be most plentiful at stores, schools and service businesses. Survey respondents who voiced plans for cuts were primarily in the construction, finance, insurance and real estate industries.
Manpower said Roanoke's outlook was bleaker than that of Manpower's 16-state southern region, which also includes the District of Columbia, and less bright than for the nation.
Nationally, the region with the largest percentage of employers expecting to hire was the Midwest, with 31 percent. The portion of Virginia with the largest percentage of employers expecting to hire workers was Fairfax County, with 58 percent.
