A teen-ager charged with ambushing and killing a motorist inside a highway rest stop bathroom led a friend to the scene weeks later, the friend told a court Monday.
Andre V. Carter, 18, and two other Spotsylvania County teen-agers are accused of cornering Bobby Lee Durham Sr., 51, in the men's bathroom at a rest area along Interstate 95.
``He said, `Right here is where that dude got shot,''' W. Curtis Carroll testified at a hearing in Carter's case. Carroll said when he asked how Carter knew that, Carter responded, ``Because I was here. We robbed that guy.'''
Relatives found Durham sprawled on the floor of the handicapped stall about 3 a.m. Dec.18. The family was driving from South Carolina to their home in Dover, Pa.
Prince William County prosecutors said Carter was the triggerman. He could face the death penalty if convicted of capital murder and robbery.
Carroll, 19, said he and Carter stopped at the Dale City rest area Jan.3 as they and other friends headed to Washington for a night on the town.
When the two men went into the bathroom, Carter described how Durham was shot three times, Carroll testified at the hearing in Prince William Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
Carter stopped short of saying he pulled the trigger, Carroll testified.
But their conversation showed Carter knew things about the crime that were not yet public knowledge, including the number of shots fired and the location of the body, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Richard Conway said.
Judge Patrick Molinari sent the case on to a grand jury. Carter is charged as an adult, but preliminary proceedings in the case took place in juvenile court because he was 17 at the time of the crime.
