Sports Journal to start in valley

The Roanoke Valley Sports Journal, a monthly publication focused on local sports, will make its debut April 1, its publisher said Monday. The publication will be a sister enterprise of the Blue Ridge Business Journal, which has been published for eight years.

Sam Lazzaro, a former executive of the Salem Avalanche baseball team, will head the sales and marketing efforts of the Roanoke Valley Sports Journal. John Montgomery, general manager of the Blue Ridge Business Journal, also will serve as publisher of the new venture.

Coal production falls 3 percent

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Domestic coal production fell 3 percent to 20.8 million tons during the week ended Feb. 15 from 21.4 million tons the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy said Monday.

The U.S. coal industry also produced 21.4 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration.

Virginia mines produced 670,000 tons during the recent survey week, down from 737,000 tons the previous week and from 741,000 tons in the corresponding week of 1996.

Domestic coal production so far this year is 133 million tons, 7 percent ahead of last year's production at this time.

The week's production accounts for bituminous and lignite coal. The week ending Feb. 15 was the latest available.
