Art exhibit focuses on Southwest Virginia

PULASKI - An exhibit of paintings by Lyndall Mason will be on display until month's end at the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley.

The exhibit, "Focus on Southwest Virginia," includes scenes from Floyd, Pulaski, Carroll, Montgomery, Wythe, Smyth and Giles counties.

Mason teaches watercolor classes at the center and was an art teacher from 1963 to 1980 at Dublin High School and then Pulaski County High School. She said her exhibit scenes "tried to capture the beauty of the near-to-home landscape with quiet places of sparkling, clear water and the seasonal changes."

She mentioned a man who processed some film for her commenting on a "right pretty stream" among the pictures. That creek was only 10 minutes from his shop, she said.

"We need these places to remember a way of life that is disappearing. We need to lift our eyes to see a canopy of sun-lit autumn leaves or the fresh green of spring. We need places to restore our soul," she said.

Goods being sought for Pulaski bake sale

PULASKI - Donations of goods for Pulaski's seventh annual Community Yard and Bake Sale, scheduled for May 1-3, are now being sought.

Baked goods can be delivered on the days of the sale. Volunteers will also be needed on those days.

Proceeds this year will be divided among the Pulaski Free Clinic, Youth Emergency Shelter, New River Valley Habitat for Humanity, SHARE baskets, and the Emergency Needs Task Force. Further information is available by calling Powers at 980-2418.
