A late-night high-speed chase that began in Christiansburg ended when the driver hit a tree stump behind a church in Dublin over the weekend.
Dublin Police Chief Russell Gwaltney said his officers arrested Garryl J. Jones, 22, of Radford on attempted malicious wounding, reckless driving and attempt to elude police.
The attempted malicious wounding charge stems from the fact that Jones twice ran his car at a Dublin officer's car, Gwaltney said.
Lt. Gary Brumfield of the Christiansburg police said the chase began early Saturday when Jones' car was spotted leaving the Old Farm Village apartment complex with its headlights off. Christiansburg officers attempted to pull Jones over, but the man fled onto Interstate 81.
Gwaltney said Jones' car reached speeds between 80 and 100 mph. The car came into Dublin after exiting I-81 into Dublin, still with its headlights off. The chase ended about 3:30 a.m. when Jones ran his car into a tree stump near a church. Jones was not injured, Gwaltney said.
In addition to the charges placed by Dublin authorities, Brumfield said Christiansburg charged Jones with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and attempt to elude police.
