SOCCER STARS GET SHOT AT THE BIG TIME

Six Roanoke Star boys' soccer players made the Virginia Olympic Development team.

The players are part of the top 32 to 36 players in their respective age groups in the state. In the 18-19 age group, it was Wade Forte and Jorge Rivera; in the 17-year-old age group it was Paul Wallace; among 15-year-olds it was Donny Smith and Michael Kraemer; and in the 13-year-old group it was Danny Karbassiyoon.

There were 110 players trying out per age group. The Olympic Development players also will have a chance to try out for one of the four regional teams in the county, as well as the national team.

In other sports news in the region:

* Salem Avalanche owner Kelvin Bowles will be among the delegates representing the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues on Thursday at the fourth annual Congressional Day in Washington, D.C.

About 70 club owners, team executives, league presidents and NAPBL officials will participate in a series of meetings with senators and representatives to express the NAPBL's views on keeping baseball's antitrust exemption.

* Ferrum College's baseball team rallied for a total of nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings Tuesday to open its season with an 11-4 Dixie Conference victory at Averett. First baseman Patrick Muncher went 2-for-6 and drove in four runs.

* Jessie Carmack had 11 kills and 20 digs and Kamala O'Quinn contributed nine kills and 16 blocks as Abingdon came from behind to defeat William Byrd 11-15, 15-7, 16-14 in a Group AA first round volleyball match in Abingdon.

The Terriers took a 5-0 lead in the deciding third game before the Falcons battled back to advance to a semifinal game on Friday against the winner of the Virginia High-Jefferson Forest matchup.

Brandy Allen led Byrd in kills, while Brennan Sigel paced the Terriers in blocks.

* The George Wythe High School volleyball team defeated Rye Cove in a Group A quarterfinal match, 15-8, 15-10, to advance to Friday's state semifinals.

Senior middle hitter Kim Corvin led the Maroons with 21 kills in the victory on the Maroons home court.

George Wythe will meet the winner of Tuesday night's second match between Northwood and Pound on Friday afternoon at Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton.

``Losing is easy,'' Maroons coach Lillie Moore said. ``Anyone can do it. Winning is hard, let me tell you. It takes a lot out of you mentally and physically.''
