WILLIAM FLEMING GIRLS FALL TO GW-DANVILLE

Shanna Price amassed 24 points, 16 rebounds and four steals as George Washington overwhelmed William Fleming 58-35 on Tuesday night in the first round of the Northwest Region girls' basketball tournament.

Fleming missed 46 of 53 field goal attempts, going more than eight minutes without a basket during one stretch in the first half.

``It looked like there was a lid over the basket,'' said Cynthia Brown, the Colonels' coach.

Meanwhile, Price scored eight points as GW opened the game with a 9-1 run behind her 4-of-4 shooting. Fleming (12-9) rallied to trail by four at the end of the quarter. The Eagles (21-2) opened things up again, though, going in front 19-8 midway through the second quarter.

Shaunarey Walker's spin move through the lane cut the Colonels' deficit back to nine, but that would be as close as they would get for the rest of the game as GW took a 27-13 lead into the locker room.

Other than that basket, Walker could do little offensively. She finished with eight points on 2-of-13 shooting.

The Eagles harassed Walker with a 1-2-2 zone that took away her ability to push the ball into the lane.

``I was really pleased with our defensive intensity,'' said Wayne Shelton, GW's coach. `` We pushed [the Colonels] out so far that it really extended their offense and forced them to take some tougher shots than they would have liked.''

The Eagles' Jutoria Myers finished the game with 17 points and five rebounds. Tonia Brown led Fleming with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Eagles advance to a regional semifinal against Pulaski County at 7 p.m.
