BROWN, Walker, 72, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, February 23, 1997. Funeral services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at Shiloh Baptist Church in Salem. Rev. Adrian Dowell will officiate, assisted by Rev. CARLSON, Fannie Haislip, of Roanoke, died Monday, February 24, 1997. She was the widow of Charles G. Carlson and a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church. Surviving are two brothers, Eugene Persing Haislip, Raleigh, N. C. and James Wilson Haislip, Roanoke. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, 11 a.m. Thursday, with Pastor Rick Elmore officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. COPENHAVER, Martha Kelly, 96, of Marion, died Monday, February 24, 1997, in the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. Miss Copenhaver was a member of the Christ Episcopal C hurch. She was a graduate of the Marion College and the Stuart Circle Hospital School of Nursing, Richmond, the School of Public Health Nursing, Richmond, and Professional Institute of William & Mary College. She is survived by one sister, Miss Roberta M. Copenhaver of Marion; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 27, at 11 a.m. at the Christ Episcopal Church with Rev. Michael Zumpf officiating. Burial will follow in Round Hill Cemetery. DAVIS, Marcus Lee, 76, of Christiansburg, passed away Monday, February 24, 1997, at his home. He was born March 10, 1920 in Blacksburg to the late Cecil J. and Willie Brickey Davis. Mr. Davis was a Federal Auditor with the U.S. Government for 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Edith ``Jean'' R. Davis; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Tracey Davis, Charleston, S.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Michael Link, Hiwassee; three grandchildren, Mark Davis Jr., Haley Davis, both of Charleston, S.C., and Wyatt Link, Hiwassee; two sisters, Elizabeth Chrisman, Oklahoma City, Okla. and Betty Richardson, Laurel, Md.; a brother, Douglas Rudolph Davis, Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 27, 1997, at 2 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, Blacksburg, with Rev. Jimmy E. Davis officiating. DAVIS, Marie Wright, 72, of Shawsville, died Tuesday morning, February 25, 1997, in Lewis-Gale Hospital. She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Knowles, Riner, Ann Sampson, Stanley, N.C.; one son, Donnie Davis, Raphine; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Eugene Hall, Shawsville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, W. A. Wright Jr. and Estelle of Shawsville, Frank and Ruth Wright, Roanoke, Wilford and Mary Wright, Christiansburg; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ben Whitaker and Rev. M. C. Sutphin. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery. DUNDORE, Michael Judson, of Roanoke, died of cancer Monday, February 24, 1997, at his home. He was an Air Force veteran and a former chief copy editor and city editor for The Roanoke Times & World-News and had been a newspaper man for more than 35 years. Michael was the husband of Faye Morgan Dundore and is also survived by an uncle, aunts and cousins. A memorial service, to celebrate his life, will be held at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, Saturday, March 1, 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Drinard Smith officiating. The cremated remains will be placed in St. Elizabeth's Church Columbarium. A reception for family and friends will be held in the parish hall following the service. The family prefers no flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, P. O. GORMAN, Mary Jane Desmond, 88, of 1201 Langhorne Rd., died Monday, February 24, 1997 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home. She was the widow of Judge Joseph Vincent Gorman. Born in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah Richard Desmond and Hallie Agner Traylor Desmond. She was preceded in death by one sister, Hallie Agnes Desmond and two brothers, William and Jeremiah Desmond. Mrs. Gorman was a graduate of Holy Cross High School and received her normal school certification from St. Joseph College. She was active in Red Cross Home Nursing and U.S.O. during World War II and other local organizations throughout the years. She was a devoted member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the retired secretary of Dalton, Pennell and Ould. She is survived by eight children, Joseph V. Gorman, Jr. of Blacksburg; Mary Jane Gorman of San Deigo, Calif.; Cecelia Kennedy of Phoenix, Ariz.; Henrietta ""Cookie"" Weidman of Harvey, La; Jeremiah D. ""Jerry"" Gorman of Richmond; Paul Gorman of Lynchburg; Marguerite Miletic of Hilton Head, S.C. and William R. Gorman of Newport News; eighteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A Mass of Resurrection will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 28, 1997 at Holy Cross Catholic Church by the Rev. Messanger J. Kenneth Rush. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. HAMBLIN, Helen Kimbleton, 84, of Parrott, died Tuesday, February 25, 1997, in a Radford hospital. She was the widow of Homer Hamblin. Surviving are two sons, Carl Hamblin of Radford and Bobby J. MOSER, Charles Baker, 82, of Chilhowie, died Monday, February 24, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Moser was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church. He was the former President of the Carpenters Union Local 1 76, and served on the Virginia State AFL/CIO Executive Board. He also worked for the West Virginia State Apprenticeship Council. Surviving are his wife, Eliza Pickle Moser, Chilhowie; one daughter, Linda Moser McClure, Chilhowie; two sons, James E. Moser, DeBary, Fla., Gene Moser, Taylors, S.C. Also surviving are six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Charles B. Moser will be conducted Thursday, February 27, at 11 a.m. from the Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Otis Barker and Rev. Avery Sheets officiating. Burial will follow in Thomas Cemetery. RICKER, Lynn Mack, (``Rick""), 71, of Salem, died Monday, February 24, 1997, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was a native of Loch Haven, Pa., and had resided in Roanoke and Salem most of his life. He retired from General Electric in 1987, where he worked in the test department. He was a Navy World War II veteran and was in the landing at Normandy. He was also a member at the Roanoke Moose Lodge 284 and past President of the Twin County Ruritan Club and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Roanoke. He was inducted into the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame of Roanoke County for his continued volunteer work at Camp Roanoke. He also served as a Sandlot Football Coach in Salem for many years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dean M. Ricker. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert M. Ricker of Roanoke, Dean A. and Robin Ricker of Salem, and Tony and Deena Volpe of Jacksonville, Fla.; six daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Jim Parker of Roanoke, Loretta and Carlton Miller of McDonough, Ga., Pennye and Jeff Epperly of B lue Ridge, Lisa and Quinn Mongan, Gayle and Edward Dooley, and Mary Crowder, all of Salem; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Louis H. Ricker of Italy, Texas; two sisters, Sallee Wilkins of Loch Haven, Pa., and Barbara R. Thomas of Buffalo Junction; many nieces and nephews, and his special angel, Betty Dean. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 27, at the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem, with Chaplain Quentin White officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at sea. SMITH, Dr. Townsend Jackson, 86, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, February 23, 1997, at his home. He was born October 15, 1910, to the late Obey Townsend and Addie Bush Smith in Doddridge County, W.Va. Dr. Smith came to VPI&SU in 1946, where he spent 30 years in the Agronomy Department. During this time he developed York and Essex soybean varieties, which are still planted by many Virginia farmers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecile Horne Smith, and a son, Townsend Jackson Smith Jr. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Kim Smith of Lowell, Mass.; four grandchildren, Joe Smith Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev., Townsend Jackson Smith III of Sacramento, Calif., and Jennifer Aileen Smith and William Jonathan Smith, both of Lowell, Mass., and a brother, Carl L. Smith of Frenso, Calif. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 1, 1997, at 11 a.m., at Blacksburg Baptist Church, with Dr. Don McKinney officiating. STANGER, Nelle Gray, 90, of Louisville, Ky., and formerly of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, February 18, 1997, at the Christian Health Center, Louisville, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen B. Stanger. She is survived by numerous cousins. SUTHERLAND, Louis Gerald, 70, of Parrott, died Monday, February 24, 1997, in a Salem hospital. He was a veteran of World War II, a retired employee of Hercules, Inc., and the founder and first chief of the Twin Community Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Stella Sutherland. Surviving are his wife, Nora S. Sutherland, Parrott; a son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Barbara Sutherland of Parrott; four sisters, Violet McGinnis, Parrott, Janice Chester, Gerrardstown, W.Va., Roxie McCoy, Parrott, and Lucille Kline, Clearwater, Fla.; one grandson, Kevin Sutherland, Parrott; his mother and father-in-law, Dolly and Willie ``Bill'' Sheppard. WILLIAMS, Dahlvis Maydian, 82, of 1017 Concord St., Selma, died Monday, February 24, 1997, at the Columbia Alleghany Regional Hospital. She was born in Selma on June 7, 1914, daughter of the late William James and Hettie Jane Nicely Maydian. She was a retired nurse's aide for the C. & O. Hospital and Emmett Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and Ladies Bible Class, graduate of Central High School, and Dabney Lancaster Community College. She organized the first Girl Scout troop in Selma and was a leader for eight years. She was President of PTA and PTA Council and Roanoke District PTA, President of Cancer Board for Clifton Forge/Alleghany East, President of District 10 Cancer Society, volunteer for Bloodmobile for 25 years, Librarian for Old Forge Garden Club, and member of Alleghany Highland Embroiders Club. She is survived by her husband, Dwight Campbell Williams of Selma; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Sandra) Smith of Clifton Forge, Mrs. Janette Simmons of Huntingtown, Md.; three sons, James David Williams of Wesgate, Clifton Forge, Jonathan Daniel Williams of Chester, and Dwight C. Williams Jr. of Mechanicsville, Md.; two sisters, Mrs. Corbin (Ruby) Reynolds of Glen Wilton, Halcie M. Hayslett of Clifton Forge; two brothers, Benjamin Maydian of Clifton Forge and Curtis R. Maydian of Selma; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, W. K. Maydian and Carl Maydian. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 28, 1997, 11 a.m., from the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with Rev. John Carrier and Rev. W. Pembroke Hall officiating. She was born on January 12, 1921, a daughter of the late Mark Floyd Reynolds and Laura Thomas Keyster Reynolds. She was a Nurses Aide, a member of Trinity Baptist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband, Roy Franklin Young, Jr.; a daughter and son-in-la w, Sheila and Cecil Jennings, Lynchburg; two brothers, Marcus and Marvin Reynolds, both of Delaware; two grandsons, Joseph C. and Tyler D.
