NO RUSH, BUT THE SHOW GOES ON

MICHAEL MEDVED, filling in for Limbaugh, will arrive at Christiansburg station WFNR 90 minutes early for a local-issue briefing.

The Rush Limbaugh Show comes to Christiansburg today, but the big man doesn't.

In his stead will be Michael Medved, Limbaugh's frequent substitute host. The show will be broadcast from the studios of WFNR (710 AM), from noon until 3 p.m.

Medved is in Virginia this morning to speak at Washington and Lee University in Lexington. When the Limbaugh folk found Rush couldn't do today's show, they called Medved, who was broadcasting his own Seattle-based radio show from Christiansburg because he couldn't get back to the West Coast in time. He'll do his show from 3-6 p.m., after Limbaugh's.

WFNR is the closest station that carries the Limbaugh show and has a broadcast-quality digital line, said Karen Travis of Travis Broadcasting. The station added the ISDN line last year to carry Radford University basketball games.

Medved is the chief film critic for the New York Post and is co-host of a PBS movie review show, "Sneak Previews." In addition to writing seven nonfiction books and appearing on Oprah Winfrey's, Dave Letterman's and Larry King's shows, Medved was a Yale Law School classmate of Bill and Hillary Clinton's.

Medved will arrive at the station 90 minutes early for a local-issue briefing, Travis said. The Limbaugh show's producers told her they wanted to give its 20 million listeners a sense of where Christiansburg is. Likely topics? The sheep cloned by a company with a Blacksburg branch, Virginia Tech and the "smart" road.

Local callers who dial (800)282-2882 won't have any better shot at reaching the Limbaugh show, however. Calls will be routed through New York City, where the show usually originates.
