ARRINGTON, Clarence Albert, 68, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, February 24, 1997. He was the son of the late Ernest and Hattie Brown Arrington. Mr. Arrington was a veteran of the United States Army who served during the Korean Conflict. He retired as a cook from the Marriott Hotel chain. He is survived by two brothers, William and Mack Arrington both of Roanoke; sister, Florence Pearson of New York; a sister-in-law, Muriel Arrington of Roanoke; host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, February 28, 1997 in the Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 t 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

CASSELL, Robert Armond, Jr., (Bobby), 31, of Pulaski passed away Tuesday, February 25, 1997. Funeral service will be held Friday, 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.

COX, Coy Waitman, 67, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 1997, in Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born December 14, 1929 in Kimball, W.Va. Mr. Cox was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Sally Cox. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Cox of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Tammy Cox, Collinsville; two a unts and spouse, Lottie Belle and E. J. Dickerson, Salem, Mazie Warner, Hillsville; one granddaughter, Kristen Cox. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, February 28, 1997, at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Rev. J. DAVIS, Marcus Lee, 76, of Christiansburg, passed away Monday, February 24, 1997, at his home. DAVIS, Marie Wright, 72, of Shawsville, died Tuesday morning, February 25, 1997, in Lewis-Gale Hospital. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ben Whitaker and Rev. M. C. Sutphin. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery. EANES, Iva Radford, 86 of Roanoke died Tuesday, February 25, 1997. She was the widow of Oscar Eanes Sr. and was a graduate of Radford College. Mrs. Eanes was a retired teacher serving in Floyd County and Roanoke City. Surviving are two sisters, Ama R. Harmon, Floyd, Essie Maye Heffner, Roanoke; a beloved sister-in-law, JoAnn Radford, also of Roanoke; a large number of nieces and nep hews. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 1 p.m. Friday, February 28, 1997. The Reverend Carol Johnston and Mr. O.A. Heffner Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. ELLIOTT, Clara Trent Ragsdale, 96, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 1997. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Josephine Crutchfield Trent. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was also a member of Fidelity Chapter #54 O.E.S. Prince Hall Affiliation. She is survived by a godson, Ray Thomas Lipscomb Sr.; devoted friends, Lessie J. Polk, Mr. and Mrs. Austin Marshall, Gloria Manns, and James D. Polk Jr. all of Roanoke, the Rev. W.R.W. Douglas of Kingsport, Tenn., the Crutchfield Family and Ideal Garden Club Family of Roanoke; others relatives and friends; and her neighbors who were very special. GORMAN, Mary Jane Desmond, 88, of 1201 Langhorne Rd., died Monday, February 24, 1997 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home. She was the widow of Judge Joseph Vincent Gorman. Born in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah Richard Desmond and Hallie Agner Traylor Desmond. She was preceded in death by one sister, Hallie Agnes Desmond and two brothers, William and Jeremiah Desmond. Mrs. Gorman was a graduate of Holy Cross High School and received her normal school certification from St. Joseph College. She was active in Red Cross Home Nursing and U.S.O. during World War II and other local organizations throughout the years. She was a devoted member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the retired secretary of Dalton, Pennell and Ould. She is survived by eight children, Joseph V. Gorman, Jr. of Blacksburg; Mary Jane Gorman of San Deigo, Calif.; Cecelia Kennedy of Phoenix, Ariz.; Henrietta ""Cookie"" Weidman of Harvey, La; Jeremiah D. ""Jerry"" Gorman of Richmond; Paul Gorman of Lynchburg; Marguerite Miletic of Hilton Head, S.C. and William R. Gorman of Newport News; eighteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A Mass of Resurrection will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 28, 1997 at Holy Cross Catholic Church by the Rev. Messanger J. Kenneth Rush. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. HALL, William Churchfield, 65, of Rt. 4, Moneta, died Tuesday, February 25, 1997 at his residence. He was born June 7, 1931 in Roanoke, a son of the late William Harry Hall and Mable Perry Breedlove Hall. KIDD, Mildred Albert, 76 of Pulaski died Wednesday, February 26, 1997 in Amelia, Va. She was born June 24, 1920 in Radford and was the daughter of the late, Gilbert Wise Albert and Mary Elizabeth Farmer Albert. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bradie Nelson Kidd. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Andrew (Mahala) Hailey of Amelia; three sons, Ronald Nelson Kidd of Goodview, Kelly A. Kidd of Floyd, Lawrence Lee Kidd of Forest; two sisters, Annie Graham of Pulaski, Elizabeth Hall of Chico, Calif.; two brothers, Landis Albert of Dublin, Basil Albert of Alcoa, Tenn.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. MARTIN, James Buford Sr., (``J. B.""), 59, of Riner, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 25, 1997 at his residence. He was born March 8, 1937 at Riner, Va. He loved everyone and had many friends. He served in the Virginia National Guard for eight years and retired from the Radford Arsenal in 1990. He was a longtime and faithful member of Park United Methodist Church in Christiansburg. Surviving are his wife, Doris Rush Martin; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Edwina Martin, Riner; one daughter and son-in-law, Lori and David Mitcham, Riner; four special grandsons, Josh and J.C. Mitcham, Christopher and Adam Martin, all of Riner; a special granddaughter, Emily Mitcham, Riner; his father father and mother, Garnett and Beulah Martin, Riner; one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Jack Smith, Riner; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Norma Martin, Stanley and Ellen Martin, all of Riner; and numerous nieces and nephews. MASON, Albert Preston, of 5416 Clear Run Dr., Wilmington, N.C., died Tuesday, February 25, 1997. He was born in Roanoke, Va. on April 25, 1918, the son of the late John Norman and Besse Hout Mason. Mr. Mason was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army during WWII, where he achieved the rank of Captain, and was also stationed with the First Army Division Anti-Aircraft Artillery. In addition, he was awarded the Bronze Star, as well as serving several campaigns in N. Africa, Sicily and European Theaters. Mr. Mason had retired from the Social Security Administration after 25 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Mrs. Anna F. Mason, of the home; two daughters, Ms. Laura Ellen Mason of Kinston, N.C. and Dr. Sarah J. Mason and husband, James L. Cathell of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two grandchildren, Jaime Frances Cathell and Jesse Noel Cathell; two brothers, J. N. Mason of Roanoke and David H. Mason of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Richardson and Mrs. Frances M. McCown, both of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. MCPEAKE, Juanita Christine Dobbins, 77, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 1997 at Fairlawn Manor Nursing Home in Radford. She was a member of the Fairlawn Presbyterian Church and was a retired employee of St. Albans Hospital. Survivors include her husband, Raymond Albert McPeake of Radford; one son, William Douglas and Sylvia McPeake of Radford; two brothers, Forest Dobbins and Donald Dobbins both of Radford. Born January 16, 1914 in Elk Creek, Va., the Fallville Community, he was the son of Lemmie and Dora Archie Robertson. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Independence and a retired employee of Kraft Foods, Inc. Surviving are his wife, Bessie Sage Robertson, Independence and a resident of Waddell Nursing Home, Galax; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Susie Robertson, Independence; two daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Mike Parsons, Salem, Verla and Sam Roten, Ennice, N.C.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Reid and Lorene Robertson, Elk Creek, Leo and Juanita Robertson, Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Clarice and Walt Billings, Independence, Grace and Boge Callahan, Elk Creek; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. ROGERS, Jacqueline Ange, 69, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, February 25, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. SAGE, Emory Harold, 72, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 1997 in Greenville, N.C. He retired from the Purchasing Dept. at Hercules with 26 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Sage was a member of the VA May Masonic Lodge #38 AF & AM. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Marshall Sage. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Sonny Dodson, Orange, Va., Judith and Dennis McCoy of Winterville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Tyler Andrew Dodson, Laura Elizabeth McCoy, and Jason Bradley McCoy; sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and Harold Miller of Wytheville. SCOTT, Margaret Emma Lee Richardson, 65, died Tuesday, February 25, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.; Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Eugene ""Buck"" Scott. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence Eugene and Anita Scott of Roanoke, Va; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia ""Pat"" and David Bowman, Barbara Ann and Willie Anderson and Rebecca ""Becky"" Scott all of Marion, Va. Nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. One sister, Stella Robinson of Marion, Va. SMITH, Dr. Townsend Jackson, 86, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, February 23, 1997, at his home. He was born October 15, 1910 to the late Obey Townsend and Addie Bush Smith in Doddridge County, West Virginia. Dr. Smith came to VPI&SU in 1946, where he spent 30 years in the Agronomy Department. During this time he developed York and Essex Soybean varieties which are still planted by many Virginia farmers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecile Horne Smith; and a son, Towsend Jackson Smith Jr. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Kim Smith, Lowell, Mass.; four grandchildren, Joe Smith Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Townsend Jackson Smith III, Sacramento, Calif., Jennifer Aileen Smith and William Jonathan Smith, both of Lowell, Mass.; a brother, Carl L. Smith, Fresno, Calif. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 1, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Blacksburg Baptist Church with Dr. Don McKinney officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

SMITH, Robert Vernon, 81, of Riner, died Wednesday, February 26, 1997 at his home. He was the son of the late Elmer Smith and Gypsie Smith Boothe. He was in partnership with his son, Robert C. Smith in Robert C. Smith Trucking from 1963 - 1981 before retiring. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Linda S. Smith of Riner; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gay S. and Andy L. Grim, Floyd, Barbara S. and Stephen E. Saul, Riner, Debbie S. and Doug Clutter, Christiansburg; a brother, Clifton Smith,Floyd; nine grandchildren, Daniel Smith, Boston, Mass., Robert Smith, Chris Saul, both of Riner, Amy Cain, Aaron Grim, both of Floyd, Beth Umbarger, Roanoke, Kellie Young, Brandon Young, Austin Clutter, all of Christiansburg; three great-grandchildren, Dakota Cain, Floyd, Jake Umbarger, Roanoke, Brandy Grim, Floyd; a special friend, Nancy Lapp, Goldsboro, N.C. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. SNYDER, Betty Moxley, 67, of Buena Vista, died Wednesday, February 26, 1997 at Community Hospital in Roanoke. She was born in Buena Vista on October 24, 1929. She as preceded in death by her husband, W. Maurice Snyder on November 22, 1996. She is survived by a step-son and wife, Reed M. and Myrtle Snyder of Buena Vista. The graveside service at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens will be at 11 a.m. Friday, February 28, 1997 with the Rev. Rebekah J. Maul officiating. STEFFEY, Charles A., 69, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, February 25, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Rural Retreat, the son of the late Charles Clinton and Lillie Mae Lundy Steffey, and was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church, (the Rural Retreat Circuit), and the Rural Retreat Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Dall Steffey. He is survived by two sisters, Mary Katherine Boye of Kingsport, Tenn. and Ruby Paxon of Chesapeake; a special nephew, John Hartle of Marion, Ohio; three special caregivers, Juanita Lethco, Ursula Stedham, and Arthur Pete Mabe. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 28, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rance Edwards and the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. WALTERS, Gladys Elizabeth, 90, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 1997. She was a member of the Cathedral of Praise. Mrs. Walters was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Walters; parents, Stephen and Nannie Shupe; a brother, Fred D. Shupe. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Clyde and Eva Walters, Aubrey Walters, Clarence and Louise Walters, Erie and June Walters; daughters and sons-in-law, Deon and Ross Shrewsbury, Edna and George Cahill, Evelyn and Franklin Huwe, Wanda and Andy Nikitenko; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Wendle. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, February 28, 1997, at Oakey's North Chapel with Rev. Harry M. Miller Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.
