Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the year Amy Athey scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Roanoke College to a 68-50 win over Lynchburg in the first round of the ODAC women's basketball tournament at the Salem Civic Center on Thursday.
Athey scored 16 points in the first half as the top-seeded Maroons (23-2) quickly jumped to an 11-point lead. The Hornets (7-18) tied the score at 26 with 3 minutes remaining in the first half before Roanoke embarked on an 8-3 run.
The Maroons extended their lead to 15 early in the second half, but Lynchburg cut it to seven on a Kelly Fackler jumper with 13:37 remaining. The Hornets got no closer.
Fackler, a Fieldale-Collinsville product playing her last game for Lynchburg, had 18 points and nine rebounds.
Roanoke advances to the semifinals today at 12:30 p.m. against No.5 Emory & Henry, an 81-72 winner over No.4 Randolph-Macon.
In Thursday's other first-round games:
Guilford 66, Washington and Lee 52: Laura Haynes and Kristin Schott scored 14 points each to lift the third-seeded Quakers over the sixth-seeded Generals.
Washington and Lee (9-16) cut a 15-point first-half deficit to 37-35 with 16:40 left, but Guilford (17-8), which plays Bridgewater today at 2:30 p.m. in a semifinal, scored the next 14 points and eventually led by 20.
Ansley Miller led the Generals with 18 points and Tonia Dean had 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Emory & Henry 81, Randolph-Macon 72: Junior guard Angie Simpkins nearly registered a triple-double as the fifth-seeded Wasps knocked off the Yellow Jackets.
Simpkins, a former Auburn High School standout, posted game-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds and dished out nine assists for Emory & Henry (15-10), which plays Roanoke today. Allison Beightol (Cave Spring) and Susan Doyle scored 14 for Randolph-Macon (15-10).
Bridgewater 78, Virginia Wesleyan 55: The second-seeded Eagles (21-4) won their first tournament game in four years behind Jennifer Young's 15 points and three 3-pointers. Nancy Mattox scored 14 for the Marlins (9-16).
