BRECKHEIMER, Donald G., (Lt. Col., U.S. Army, ret.), of Roanoke, lost his courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, February 18, 1997. He would have been 64 on February 20. Husband and Best Friend of wife Barbara, adoptive dad to Jeanne Faith (Barbara's daughter). He also leaves a son and daughter from a previous marriage. Graduated from St. Peter's College, with an MBA from Oklahoma City University, Don was a Hazardous Materials expert and Transportation Specialist. Our Don had a special sense of humor and shall be remembered for his friendly manner and constant willingness to help other people. He leaves a real empty space in our lives. Col. Breckheimer served in Vietnam. A visitation at Oakey's South Chapel will be on Saturday, March 1, 1997, from 12 noon until 4 p.m. Graveside services with full military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery at 3 p.m. Monday, March 3, 1997. EDMONSON, Mary Baker, 79, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, February 27, 1997, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home. She was the widow of Clarence (Ed) Edmonson. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin and Cindy Edmonson, Christiansburg, Ron and Debbie Edmonson, Charlotte, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Steve Rusmissel, Norcross, Ga.; brothers, Brice Baker and Eppie Baker, both of Maryville, Tenn.; sister, Joe Pearl Head, Knoxville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Kelly and Jason Edmonson, Christiansburg, Casey and Candiace Edmonson, Charlotte, N.C., Rob Eley and Joy Rusmissel of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. LEFTWICH, Franklin Donald, of Hardy, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 26, 1997. He was retired from Singer Furniture, and is survived by his wife, Doris N. MARTIN, James Buford Sr., (``J.B.''), 59, of Riner, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 25, 1997, at his residence. He was born March 8, 1937 at Riner. He loved everyone and had many friends. He served in the Virginia National Guard for eight years and retired from the Radford Arsenal in 1990. He was a longtime and faithful member of Park United Methodist Church in Christiansburg. Surviving are his wife, Doris Rush Martin; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Edwina Martin, Riner; one daughter and son-in-law, Lori and David Mitcham, Riner; four special grandsons, Josh and J. C. Mitcham, Christopher and Adam Martin, all of Riner; a special granddaughter, Emily Mitcham, Riner; his father and mother, Garnett and Beulah Martin, Riner; one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Jack Smith, Riner; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Norma Martin, Stanley and Ellen Martin, all of Riner; and numerous nieces and nephews. MASON, Charles Arie Jr., 75, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, February 25, 1997, at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond. Born in Amherst County on September 5, 1921, he was the son of the late Charles Arie Mason Sr. and Annie Eliza Clark Mason. Mr. Mason attended Peoples Baptist Church, and was a graduate of Christian Bible College in Rocky Mount, N.C. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. He was owner and operator of Mason's TV and Music for 27 years. Surviving are his wife, Clelon C. Mason of Buena Vista; three daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Beaver of Coeburn, Mrs. Paula Keller of Manassas and Mrs. Shelley Parsons of Richmond; four sons, Mr. Carnes Mason of Buena Vista, Mr. Michael Clark of Waynesboro, Mr. Gary Mason of Cherryville, N.C., and Mr. Charles A. Mason III of Purcellville; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Burch of Buena Vista and Mrs. Lee Anna Massie of Lynchburg; 20 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 1997, from the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel, with Dr. W. Wyatt Mayes, pastor, friend and brother in Christ, officiating. McPEAKE, Juanita Christine Dobbins, 77, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 1997, at Fairlawn Manor Nursing Home in Radford. She was a member of the Fairlawn Presbyterian Church and was a retired employee of St. Albans Hospital. Survivors include her husband, Raymond Albert McPeake of Radford; one son, William Douglas and Sylvia McPeake of Radford; two brothers, Forest Dobbins and Donald Dobbins both of Radford. Two sisters, Mrs. Geneva Young of Radford, and Mrs. Esther Long of Cleveland, Tenn , Two Grandchildren, Timothy and Janet McPeake of Radofrd; two grandchildren, Timothy & Janet McPeake of Dublin, and Jeffrey & Stacey McPeake of Radford. MONTGOMERY, Samuel Fleming, 74, of 111 Wolf Street, Narrows, died Wednesday, February 26, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Buchanan on July 10, 1922, and was the son of the late Earl C. (``E. C."") and Lemonia Carter Montgomery. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin and Radford Montgomery. He was a member of the Narrows Police Department for 30 years. The last 15 years prior to his retirement, he served as Chief of Police for the Town of Narrows. He was a veteran of World War II, and was a member of the V.F.W. Post #6000, and the American Legion Post #68 of Narrows. Mr. Montgomery was a member of the First Baptist Church in Narrows and the Intermont Lodge #259 A.F.&A.M. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Kazim Temple of Roanoke. He is survived by his wife, Mary Mildred Mundy Montgomery of Narrows ; five sons, David F. Montgomery, Florence, Colo., Steve Montgomery and his wife, Jean, of Rich Creek, Eddie Montgomery and his wife, Caroline, of Richmond, Roy Lee Montgomery and his wife, Gloria, of Pearisburg, Leo Montgomery of Narrows; a brother and his wife, E. C. and Rebecca Montgomery of Buchanan; a sister and her husband, Nancy and Jimmy Deer, Surfside, S.C.; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 1, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Narrows with Dr. W. L. Crane and the Rev. Rick Painter officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, with graveside rites conducted by the Giles County American Legion Post and V.F.W. Post #6000. MOORE, Madeline Cooper, 93, of Roanoke, departed this life Wednesday, February 26, 1997. She was born in Roanoke on August 14, 1903, to the late Rev. William Moore and Elizabeth Morris Moore. She was one of eight siblings who preceded her in death. During her younger years and prior to retirement, she was very active in civic affairs. She has been a faithful member of High Street Baptist Church since 1916 and was selected as Mother of the Year in 1972. She was also a member of the Senior Choir and August Birth Month Club. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Ernell Glasby of Salem; two daughters and a son-in-law, Callie G. Smith and Dr. Eddie Smith of Washington, D.C. and Sandra E. Moore of Roanoke; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Family and friends may call on Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at High Street Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at High Street Baptist Church Saturday at 11 a.m. Family and friends will gather in the Chapel for prayer service at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Williams Memorial Park. SCOTT, Joseph Justin, 81, of Marion, died Wednesday, February 26, 1997, in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a partner in Scott Furniture Company in Marion, along with his brothers, W. W. Scott Jr. and James Scott, for 37 years. He attended National Business College in Roanoke. He was a charter member and past president of Marion Lions Club, a charter member and former Commander of VFW Post 4667, past president of Marion Retail Merchants Association, and member of Smyth County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #31, and a life-time member of the First United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, as SK-1c on an attack transport, the U.S.S. DuPage. He received the American Theatre and Asiatic Pacific Medals. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilson White Scott; his mother, Lillie Stephenson Scott; two brothers, John M. and James S. Scott; and a sister, Martha S. Kingham. He is survived by his wife, Alpha Johnstone Scott of Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, T eresa Edgerton-Scott and Fredrick R. Edgerton Jr. of Shreveport, La., Susan S. and James D. Brooks of Williamsburg, Elizabeth S. and Dr. James L. Gates of Marion; one brother, Wilson W. Scott Jr. of Marion; four grandchildren, Carrie Jane Brooks, Jeffrey Scott Brooks, Emily Raasch Gates, and Justin Lewis Gates; five nephews and three nieces. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 1, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. J. N. Howard officiating. Entombment will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. SMITH, Dr. Townsend Jackson, 86, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, February 23, 1997, at his home. He was born October 15, 1 910, to the late Obey Townsend and Addie Bush Smith in Doddridge County, West Virginia. Dr. Smith came to VPI&SU in 1946, where he spent 30 years in the Agronomy Department. During this time he developed York and Essex Soybean varieties which are still planted by many Virginia farmers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecile Horne Smith; and a son, Townsend Jackson Smith Jr. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Kim Smith, Lowell, Mass.; four grandchildren, Joe Smith Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Townsend Jackson Smith III, Sacramento, Calif., Jennifer Aileen Smith and William Jonathan Smith, both of Lowell, Mass.; a brother, Carl L. Smith, Fresno, Calif. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 1, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Blacksburg Baptist Church with Dr. Don McKinney officiating. THOMAS, Alice Turner, 90, of Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, February 26, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. Mrs. Thomas was a graduate of Radford College with a Bachelor of Science degree, and taught for 40 years in the Franklin and Patrick County Public Schools and one year in Alaska. She was a faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church, serving through the years as a Sunday School Teacher and a member of Women on Missions. Mrs. Thomas was also a member of Gideons International Ladies Auxiliary, having served as President, Chaplain and Secretary of the Franklin County Camp. She was also active with the Pioneer Senior Citizens of Franklin County. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson E. Thomas, and an infant son, Frank Lee Thomas. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Bill Long of Blackshear, Ga., and Sue and Roger Anglin of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Christina Alice Stutts, Jennifer Marie Stutts and Thomas Roger Anglin; one sister, Mary Hylton of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Turner and Margaret Turner, both of Stuart, Wilma Turner of Collinsville, Fannie Thomas, Salem and Mary Ann Zunke of Tipp City, Ohio; one brother-in-law, John L. Thomas of Washington Courthouse, Ohio, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Beulah Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. T. WEAVER, Clara Erdman, 82, of Lexington, died Thursday, February 27, 1997, in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Facility, Buena Vista. Mrs. Weaver was born in Baltimore, Md. on April 2, 1914 and was the daughter of the late Harry Stone Erdman and Florence Chase Erdman. She was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Weaver is survived by two daughters, Anne Chase Owen and Janet Lynn Blackburn, both of Lexington; one son, Robert Bower Weaver, Jr., Midlothian; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, Lexington, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 1997, with Dr. William Klein officiating.
