CAVALIERS TAP SCHUDEL

Paul Schudel, the head football coach at Ball State from 1985-94, has accepted an offer to join the staff at Virginia.

Schudel, the offensive coordinator at Illinois for the past two seasons, will coach the offensive line at UVa. He replaces Tom O'Brien, the new head coach at Boston College.

Schudel (pronounced Sh-DELL) is a 1966 graduate of Miami of Ohio who has coached at New Hampshire, Colorado State, William and Mary and Syracuse. He coached the offensive line at Michigan under Bo Schembechler for 10 years, 1975-84.

O'Brien served as Virginia's offensive coordinator, but UVa head coach George Welsh has not said whether he will have an offensive coordinator. However, in Schudel and quarterbacks coach Joe Krivak, the Cavaliers have two former Division I-A head coaches.

Schudel had a 60-48-4 record at Ball State, including two Mid-American Conference championships. His 1993 team went 8-2-1 before losing to Utah State in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Schudel, 52, became available to the Cavaliers when Illinois decided not to retain his boss, Lou Tepper, after a 2-9 season in 1996.

The hiring of Schudel comes one week after the addition of David Turner as the Cavaliers' new defensive line coach, replacing Jerry Petercuskie. It is possible that UVa could make one more staff change before spring practice, sources say.
