UVA LOSES IN LACROSSE

Casey Powell scored seven goals, including the game-winner with 2:34 left, as third-ranked Syracuse edged No.2 Virginia 22-21 on Friday night in a men's lacrosse opener at the Carrier Dome.

The Cavaliers took a seven-goal lead, at 19-12, on a goal by Tucker Radebaugh with 6:13 to go in the third quarter. But Syracuse came back and tied it on Powell's sixth goal, with 9:17 to go in the game.

Virginia went back in front on goals by David Curry and Doug Knight, before Rob Kavovit and Doug Jackson tied it again for the Orangemen.

Kavovit finished with six goals for Syracuse and Powell had six assists.

Knight had four goals and two assists, and Michael Watson added two goals and five assists for the Cavaliers, who were 0-for-8 in man-up situations.
