FLEETMASTER ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT

Fleetmaster Express Inc. of Roanoke has elected R. CARL BUMGARNER president of the corporation. He succeeds his father, BILL B. BUMGARNER, who remains chairman of the board.

HAROLD D. HOPPER was re-elected vice president, LINIEL G. GREGORY was elected secretary and JAMES W. ROBERTS was elected company treasurer.

Fleetmaster, a motor freight company employing 165 people from four terminals in Virginia and North Carolina, offers specialized transportation services.

ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS

OTHO E. CRAFT JR. has been named chairman of the board of directors of Thompson & Litton, an architectural and engineering firm based in Wise. Craft, formerly president of the company, succeeds S. HOYT WILLIAMS. RONALD G. HELTON, formerly Thompson & Litton's executive vice president, has been named president.

Craft joined Thompson & Litton in 1981 as vice president and was elected president in 1990. Helton joined the company in 1979 and was named executive vice president in 1996.

ELECTRONICS

JAMES PRESTON has been appointed secretary/treasurer of Elliot Controls Inc. of Roanoke, where he is a control design engineer.

GOVERNMENT

HULLIHEN WILLIAMS MOORE has been named chairman of the State Corporation Commission for the next year, succeeding THEODORE V. MORRISON JR. in the annual rotation of the chairmanship among the SCC's three commissioners. Moore, a Roanoke native and former lawyer with the Richmond firm of Christian, Barton, Epps, Brent & Chappell, joined the commission in 1992.

HOSPITALITY

BLAINE SHIVELY has been named general manager of the Hampton Inn/Columbia Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. The hotel, which is scheduled to open in May, will be connected to the hospital. Shively, who has more than 16 years of hotel management experience, most recently was general manager of the Marriott Hotel in Blacksburg. The new general manager of the Blacksburg Marriott is BOB GAUL.

INSURANCE

DAVID G. MANKIN JR. has been appointed director of marketing for the John Hancock-Smith Agency in Roanoke. JASON PETERS has joined John Hancock Financial Services in Roanoke as a marketing representative. PHILLIP VANOVER has been appointed marketing representative for John Hancock-Smith Agency in Clintwood.

JERRY L. DUNNAVANT has been named manager of Lawyers Title Insurance Corp.'s Roanoke office. He succeeds JOHN RENICK, who has retired. Dunnavant joined Lawyers Title in 1993 as a sales representative and was named senior sales representative the following year. Before that, he worked for Dominion Bankshares in Roanoke. Renick joined the company in 1987.

LAW

HEMAN A. MARSHALL III has been re-elected president and is the new chairman of the board of Woods, Rogers & Hazlegrove in Roanoke. He succeeds TALFOURD KEMPER in the chairman's position. The law firm has also elected DANIEL S. BROWN, GEORGE J.A. CLEMO and EDWARD R. SLAUGHTER JR. to its board of directors.

Marshall, who joined Woods, Rogers & Hazlegrove in 1975, practices health, antitrust and corporate law. He also leads the firm's health law group. Brown joined the firm in 1966 and heads its litigation section. Clemo, who joined the firm in 1988, practices in the areas of tax-exempt finance, conventional finance, administrative law and international transactions. Slaughter joined Woods, Rogers in 1996 and practices in the areas of civil litigation and international commercial law.

MEDIA

MARGIE BURGESS, director of promotion at WDBJ-TV (Channel 7) in Roanoke, has been named to the CBS promotion executive caucus board. She will represent CBS-affiliated stations throughout the country in advising the network on advertising and promotional strategies. WDBJ has been a CBS affiliate in Roanoke for more than 40 years.

NONPROFITS

At Total Action Against Poverty, an anti-poverty agency in Roanoke, HEIDI GREENE has joined the staff as director of development. Also at TAP, ELIZABETH R. BISHOP has been named planning director and CYNTHIA HEBBLETHWAITE is the new finance director.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

The Blue Ridge Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America has elected officers for 1997: MARY S. KING, public relations specialist for Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, president; TERRI R. JONES, regional publications editor for Columbia Healthcare of Southwest Virginia, president-elect; BRIAN J. GOTTSTEIN, vice president of marketing and communications for United Way of Roanoke Valley, secretary; and CASEY DOSS, public relations specialist in Virginia Tech's university relations department, treasurer. VINCENT HAZLETON, a professor at Radford University, will represent the chapter as assembly delegate at the society's national conference. Directors-at-large are RACHEL O. HOLLOWAY, assistant professor at Virginia Tech; LIN D. CHAFF of Lin Chaff Public Relations; ANGELA J. McPEAK, cable access director for Roanoke Valley Television; and MICHELLE BONO, public information officer for the city of Roanoke.

REAL ESTATE

JONNA M. McGRAW has joined Woltz & Associates Inc., brokers and auctioneers in Roanoke, as in-house legal counsel. McGraw was in private practice in Roanoke before joining the company.

TRANSPORTATION

PAIGE R. BOHM has joined the staff of Old Dominion Freight Line as a district sales representative.

J.C. "JACK" LANFORD, president and chief executive officer of Adams Construction Co. of Roanoke, has been elected chairman of the board of directors of The Road Information Program (TRIP), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit national organization that researches and distributes data on highway transportation issues. Lanford has been a member of the TRIP board since 1986.
