Patrick Henry's Louis Booker won the 500-meter dash and ran a leg on the winning 800 relay team as the Patriots finished second Saturday at the VHSL Group AAA indoor track and field meet at George Mason University, winning the event in 1:05.57.
Booker was the only Timesland-area individual to place first in an event, finishing in 1 minute, 5.57 seconds. The PH relay team, which also included James Hickenbotham, Chad Giles and Shaun Akers, was timed in 1:30.38.
Hayfield took the boys title with a score of 49 points. Patrick Henry placed second with 42 and William Fleming finished in a tie for 53rd with two points. In the girl's meet, Thomas Jefferson-Fairfax won the title with 60 points and William Fleming placed 38th with two points.
In other high school sports news in the region:
* Cave Spring finished 15th in the Group AAA wrestling championships at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake.
Damon Daniels placed fourth at 215 pounds and Matt Berger was fifth at 275 as the Knights accumulated 33 points. Pulaski County's J.R. Osbourne placed fifth at 171, and William Fleming's Maurice Lacy was sixth at 125.
Western Branch captured the Group AAA team crown with 133.5 points. Franklin County finished with 12 team points, Pulaski County had eight and William Fleming seven.
* George Wythe completed the school's first unbeaten volleyball season as the Maroons defeated Woodstock Central 15-6, 15-4 to win the Group A championship in Staunton. The front-row hitting of Kimberly Corvin was the key to the victory for the Maroons (26-0), who also won the crown in 1994.
COLLEGE Doughty 2nd in IC4A pentathlon
Former Cave Spring High School standout Todd Doughty turned in a personal-best point total of 3,717 to finish second overall in the pentathalon at the ICAAAA indoor track and field championships in Princeton, N.J.
In the five-event pentathalon competition, Doughty turned in the field's fastest times in the 55-meter hurdles (7.89 seconds) and the 1,000 (2:38.18). He was edged out for first place by Army's Jonathan Pontius, who compiled 3,841 points.
Doughty, a senior, helped lead William and Mary to a seventh-place tie in the team standings at the midway point of the two-day competition.
* VMI crowned individual champions in three weight classes as the Keydets finished in a three-way tie for first place in the team competition at the Southern Conference wrestling championships in Greensboro, N.C.
VMI's Adam Mickiewicz won at 134 pounds, Jason Foresman claimed the title at 150 and Leslie Apedoe took the heavyweight championship. Those Keydets advance to the NCAA championships, along with teammate Reese Edgington, who was awarded an NCAA wild-card berth as the 158-pound runner-up.
For the first time in league history the team championship was shared by three schools. VMI, Appalachian State and UNC-Greensboro all accumulated 73 points.
* Roanoke College sprinter Sindy Wilson won the women's Division III 55-meter dash at East Tennessee State's Last Chance Meet in Johnson City, Tenn.
Wilson, who posted a time of 7.80 seconds in the 55, was one of several Maroons who posted strong times in the NCAA-qualifying meet. Rebecca Keel finished second in the 55, while Shelli Stevens was third in the 55hurdles (9.15 seconds).
Leah Ann Agee (Cave Spring) set a school indoor record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.0.
* A bloop two-run single by catcher Jimmie Romano with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave 17th-ranked South Florida a 2-1 victory over Virginia Tech in a baseball game in Tampa, Fla.
Hokies pitcher Denny Wagner (1-1) took a shutout into the ninth, but gave up a single to Mike Diaz and a double to Ross Gload. After walking Jorge DeLeon intentionally to load the bases, Wagner struck out the next two batters before Romano lifted a pitch into the wind. Center fielder Gray Hodges was unable to make a diving catch.
Tech (2-2) scored its run on an RBI single by Kris Turberville in the second inning.
* North Carolina-Wilmington took advantage of nine Radford errors to post a 12-2 victory in the first game as the Seahawks swept a baseball doubleheader in Wilmington, N.C.
UNC Wilmington spotted the Highlanders a 2-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap before rallying for a 3-2 victory.
ETC. CCA swimmers make waves again
Carter Center Aquatics individuals continued to win on the second day of the Virginia Simming A/BB Championships at the Dedmon Center pool in Radford.
In the boys' 15- to 18-year-old division, Adam Baber won the 50-yard freestyle and Zach Cromer won the 500 freestyle.
In the girls' 15-18 division, Ann Durham won the 200-yard butterfly.
Jamie Trivett won the 200 breast stroke and the 200 butterfly and Meg Beazley took the 50 freestyle in the girls'13-14 division. In the girls' 11-12 division, Lindsay Hock won the 50 backstroke and Case Blackwell won the 50 fly in the boys' 10-and-under division.
