George Wythe completed the school's first unbeaten volleyball season as the Maroons defeated Central High School of Woodstock 15-6, 15-4 to win the state Group A championship at Robert E. Lee High in Staunton.
The front row hitting of Kimberly Corvin was the key to the victory for the Maroons (26-0), who also captured the Group A volleyball crown in 1994. The senior accounted for nine of George Wythe's 30 points, and led to seven side outs on Central service points.
The Falcons (23-3) lost in Group A final for the second straight year. Stuarts Draft defeated Central in 1996.

* VMI crowned individual champions in three weight classes Saturday as the Keydets finished in a three-way tie for first place in the team competition at the Southern Conference wrestling tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
VMI's Adam Mickiewicz won at 134 pounds, Jason Foresman claimed the title at 150 and Leslie Apedoe took the heavyweight championship. Those Keydets advance to the NCAA championships, along with teammate Reese Edgington, who was awarded an NCAA wild-card berth as the 158-pound runner-up.
For the first time in league history the team championship was shared by three schools. VMI, Appalachian State and UNC-Greensboro all accumulated 73 points. UT-Chattanooga finished fourth with 60.5 points, followed by the Citadel (42 points) and Davidson (12.5).
* Sixteenth-ranked Rutgers spotted VMI an early lead, but the Scarlett Knights awakened and came back for a 19-5 victory over the Keydets in a men's lacrosse game at Patchin Field in Lexington.
VMI (0-1) led 3-1 after the first quarter on goals by Steve Schwanke, Mason Ayers and Aaron Bush. Rutgers (2-0) responded with 11 consecutive goals to lead 14-4 after three periods.
Aaron Kurdyla, Craig Buckley and Jon Corso each scored three goals for the Scarlett Knights, who ended the Keydets' run of consecutive season-opening victories at seven.
* In other men's lacrosse games,senior attackman Ande Jenkins tied a school record with eight goals to lead Washington and Lee to a 23-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Virginia Wesleyan in Norfolk.
The Generals (1-0, 1-0), ranked 10th nationally in the preseason, led 10-5 at the half before Jenkins scored a pair of goals to key a 4-0 W&L run in the first three minutes of the third quarter.
Jenkins, a third team All-American in 1996, tied the school mark for the second time in the last two seasons. Ed Dougherty had three goals and two assists, while Chris Brown added three goals for the Generals.
The Marlins (0-1, 0-1) were led by Pete Derby's three goals.
* Radford jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 19-10 victory over Mercyhurst, in the first collegiate men's lacrosse game ever played by the Lakers.
The Highlanders (1-0), who led 6-1 in the second period, were led by freshman David Benes, who had three goals and four assists. Corey Fenley scored four goals for Radford, while Dan Harris paced Mercyhurst (0-1) with three goals and an assist.
* A bloop two-run single by catcher Jimmie Romano with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave 17th-ranked South Florida a 2-1 victory over Virginia Tech in a baseball game in Tampa, Fla.
Hokies pitcher Denny Wagner (1-1) took a shutout into the ninth, but gave up a single to Mike Diaz and a double to Ross Gload. After walking Jorge DeLeon intentionally to load the bases, Wagner struck out the next two batters before Romano lifted a pitch into the wind. Center fielder Gray Hodges was unable to make a diving catch.
Tech (2-2) scored its run on an RBI single by Kris Turberville in the second inning.
* UNC Wilmington took advantage of nine Radford errors to post a 12-2 win in game one as the Seahawks swept a college baseball doubleheader at Brook's Field in Wilmington, N.C.
UNC-Wilmington spotted the Highlanders a 2-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap before rallying for a 3-2 victory. The Seahawks, who pounded out 15 hits in the second game, tied the score with two runs in the second and picked up the game-winner in the fourth.
* Former Cave Spring standout Todd Doughty turned in a personal best point total of 3717 to finish second overall in the pentathalon at the ICAAAA indoor track and field championships at Princeton University on Saturday.
Doughty, a senior, helped lead William and Mary to a seventh place tie in the team standings at the midway point of the two-day competition.
In the five-event pentathalon competition, Doughty turned in the field's fastest times in the 55 meter high hurdles (7.89 seconds) and the 1,000 meter run (2:38.18). He was edged out for first place by Army's Jonathan Pontius, who compiled 3,841 points.
* Virginia Tech's Curtis Deal carded a 1-under par 71 as the Hokies posted a team score of 295 in the second round of the Matlock Collegiate Classic at the ImperiaLakes Golf Course in Lakeland, Fla.
Tech has a two-day total of 588 and is 11th in the 18-team tournament. Augusta State leads the field with a two-round total of 566.
