UVA ROUTS MERCYHURST IN LACROSSE

Virginia's third-ranked men's lacrosse team scored early and often on Monday, beating Mercyhurst 27-2 in Charlottesville.

It was UVa's 15th home-opening victory in its past 16 seasons. Attackman Michael Watson led Cavaliers scorers with four goals and three assists, and attackman David Bruce had four goals. Senior attacker Doug Knight added three goals and two assists.

The Lakers had just 12 shots in the game. Virginia plays at No.1 Princeton on Saturday.

In other news in the region:

* Third baseman Mike Cervenak drove in four runs to help Michigan to a 9-4 baseball victory over Virginia Tech in the opening game of the 50th annual Rollins College ``Baseball Week'' Tournament in Winter Park, Fla.

Tech (2-4) got two hits each from Kevin Kurilla and Barry Gauch. Freshman Todd Zirkle took the loss in his first collegiate start for the Hokies.

* Ferrum outfielder Pat Daly followed a prodigious performance Sunday with a 3-for-4 outing Monday as the Panthers defeated Walsh College 15-4 in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Daly hit two home runs Sunday in Ferrum's 11-2 win over Rose-Hulman College. The Panthers (3-1) play a double-header against Emory & Henry today beginning at 10 a.m.

* The Virginia Tech softball team scored five runs in the sixth inning, including a grand slam, inside-the-park home run by junior catcher Jennifer McKibben to beat Holy Family 10-4 and then fell to Holy Cross 5-1 in the first day of the Fort Myers (Fla.) Softball Tournament.
